이 글은 김동리의 『을화』와 치누아 아체베의 『모든 것이 산산이 부서지다』를 대상으로 한다. 두 작품은 모두 기독교와 토착 신앙이 충돌하는 모습을 보여 준다는 점에서 공통점이 있으나, 차이점 또한 확연하다. 을화 에서 기독교는 서구 제국주의와 동의어가 아니며, 기독교를 긍정적으로 받아들이기 때문이다. 그럼에도 토착 신앙과 가치체계를 고수하는 부모 세대와 기독교적 가치체계를 받아들인 아들 세대는 서로 충돌하게 된다. 그 결과 을화에서는 아들 영술이, 『모든 것이 산산이 부서지다』에서는 아버지 오콩코가 죽음을 맞이하게 된다. 영술의 죽음은 기독교가 토착 신앙화되고 가부장제 이데올로기에 결합하면서 일어난 것이었다. 오콩코의 죽음은 기독교로 대표되는 서구 제국주의 세계의 폭력 때문이었다. 그러나 두 작품의 결말에서, 기독교와 지배 이데올로기의 양 면성을 읽을 필요가 있다. 젊은 세대를 희생양으로 삼은 가부장제 이데올로기와 존중받아야 할 문화를 삭제하는 제국주의가 모두 폭력적으로 드러나기 때문이 다. 종교가 지배 이데올로기와 결합하면서 빚어진 죽음을 그려낸다는 점에서 두 작품을 재독해야 할 것이다. 이러한 작업을 기반으로 종교 간의 갈등이 문학작 품에서 그려지는 조건과 인물형을 유형화할 수 있을 것이다.

There are similar aspects of conflict between religions such as Christianity and indigenous faith in Dong-ri Kim’s Eulhwa and Chinua Achebe’s Things Fall Apart. In Things Fall Apart, Christianity is a metaphor for imperialism, on the other hand, it is analogous to Western culture, not the same as imperialism in Eulhwa. This is due to the peculiarities that have arisen in the process of Christian propagation. The generation of the parents, who adhere to the indigenous faith and value system and the generation of the son who accepts the Christian value system, collide with each other. In order to fully comprehend the conclusion of both works and the subsequent deaths of Youngsul and Okongwo, it is necessary to read both sides of the dominant ideology. It is because both the patriarchal ideology that regards the young generation as a victim and the imperialism that erases the culture to be respected are violently exposed. The two works must be re-read in that religion draws the death that is made by combining with the dominant ideology.
