한국사회에 정착하는 북한이주주민들은 대체로 기독교에 대하여 호의적인 시각을 가지고 있다. 그러나 이들이 실제로 한국교회에 적응 하는 것은 쉽지 않으며, 교회를 다니는 북한이주주민들의 비율도 지속 적으로 줄고 있는 상황이다. 본 연구는 심층 인터뷰를 통하여 북한이주 주민들의 부정적인 한국교회 경험들을 정리하고 분석하였다. 인터뷰에 따르면, 북한이주주민들에게 교회는 부담스러운 곳으로 인식될 때가 많으며, 기독교의 가르침은 낯설고 이해하기 어려운 것으로 나타났다. 이는 한국교회의 문화상대주의적인 시각의 결핍과 북한이주주민에 대한 도구적 접근, 비대칭적인 관계 설정 등의 문제에서 기인한다. 이에 본 연구는 한국교회의 북한이주주민들을 향한 선교사역이 하나님 의 환대에 기초하여 재구성되어야 함을 주장하였다. 성급하게 북한이주 주민들을 변화시키려 하기 보다는 그들의 고유한 정체성과 독특한 문화를 있는 그대로 받아들이면서 복음을 소통하는 환대의 선교를 통하여 믿음의 공동체를 함께 세워가야 하는 것이다.

North Korean migrants have a favorable view of Christianity and often are known to visit South Korean churches in the early stages of resettlement. Despite this, however, the Protestant church has proven to be a difficult place for North Korean migrants to adjust despite their initial interest in Christianity. Based on my in-depth interviews on North Korean migrants’ church experiences, I listed some of the recurring themes regarding their negative experiences in South Korean church. In reality, church is a burdensome place for North Korean migrants and Christianity is typically unfamiliar and even incomprehensible to most of the North Korean migrants. As a result, I suggested a mission of hospitality, which is a participation in God’s hospitality, as a proper way for South Korean Christians to approach the North Korean migrants.
