코른골트는 초기 할리우드 영화음악사에서 전통음악을 공부한 첫 번째 세대로 분류된다. 코른골트는 리하르트 슈트라우스의 화성을 즐겨 사용하였고, 후기 낭만주의의 소리와 음색 을 즐겨 사용하였다. 특히 코른골트는 영화음악에 오페라 작곡 기법을 수용했다. 코른골트 의 음악적 특징은 장대한 심포닉 사운드를 사용하는 오케스트라 음악과 각 장면과 대상을 상 징하는 라이트모티브 기법의 사용이었다. 코른골트는 음악을 통해 영화 장면을 연결해주며, 인물의 내면세계를 잘 표현하였다. 그가 사용했던 오페라적 기법과 심포닉 사운드는 할리우 드의 전통이 되었으며, 존 윌리엄스에게 큰 영향을 주었다.

Erich Wolfgang Korngold, as a composer from Austria, belongs to the first generation of film music composers in Hollywood who learned traditional western music in Europe. Korngold liked using the sounds and the ton-color of late-Romanticism such as the harmony of Richard Strauss and the melody of Tchaikovsky and Puccini. Korngold adapted methods of opera for his film music. His musical characteristics are spectacular symphony orchestra sound and leitmotiv of Richard Wagner. Korngold was good at expressing the inner world of the characters in the films by music. His film music became the foundation stone for development of hollywood film music. He has great effects on his later film music composers, especially on John Williams.
