북극의 해양경계획정에 대한 현황과 의의를 통하여 북극연안국들의 해양관할권 확보 움직임에 대한 동향을 분석하는 것을 주 목적으로 한다. 북극해연안국 사이에서 양자조약 및 다자조약의 체결을 통해 미국과 캐나다 사이의 보퍼트 해의 해양경계를 제외한 대부분의 지역에 대하여 해양경계가 획정되었다. 북극의 해양경계획정은 대부분 완료된 상황으로, 향후 북극해연안국들의 200해리 이원의 대륙붕 외측 한계 설정에 대한 움직임과 맞물려 북극해연안국들의 해양관할권 확장
