퓌비 드 샤반느는 1895년-1896년 보스턴 공공 도서관을 위해 벽화 9점을 제작, 설치 했다. 보스턴 공공 도서관에 설치된 <계몽의 천재를 환영하는 뮤즈들>과 <시, 철학, 역 사, 과학> 벽화는 퓌비의 벽화 작품 가운데 미국이 소장하고 있는 유일한 공공 벽화이 며, 프랑스 벽화의 미국 정착이라는 점에서 의의가 있다. 프랑스 아카데미의 중심에 있 던 퓌비 벽화의 개념, 양식, 기법 등은 두 가지 경로로 미국 미술가들에게 전파되었다. 퓌비의 벽화 미술은 첫째, 파리에서 유학한 학생들이 직접 접한 경험과 둘째, 보스턴 공 공 도서관 벽화를 통해 전파되었다. 특히 보스턴 공공 도서관 벽화 구성법은 미국 미술 가들에게 유럽 대륙으로 가지 않더라도 에콜 데 보자르식의 벽화를 볼 수 있는 기회를 제공하면서 인물 구성, 테마의 적용, 알레고리와 상징의 사용 등 많은 영향을 끼쳤다. 미국 벽화가들은 퓌비 벽화의 알레고리 재현 방식을 따랐다. 퓌비의 알레고리 회화 들은 1846년과 1848년 두 차례의 이탈리아 여행을 통해서 본 이탈리아 미술의 영향 때 문이다. 초기 아메리칸 르네상스 벽화가들은 창백한 톤, 평화로운 아카디아 풍경, 주름 옷을 입은 인물 등에서 퓌비의 테크닉을 따라했다. 퓌비는 보스턴 공공 도서관 벽화를 의뢰받았을 때, 벽화를 구성하는데 가장 중요한 요소에 대해 고민했다. 퓌비는 토머스 에디슨이 발명한 전기가 미국에서는 가장 중요 한 요소라고 보았다. 퓌비는 바로 이 전기가 가장 미국적인 발명품이라는데 공감했으 며, 보스턴 공공 도서관 벽화에서 미국의 산업과 테크놀로지를 통한 미국적 가치관을 강화하고자 했다. 미국 벽화가들은 퓌비가 묘사한 테크놀로지 테마에서 고전주의가 아 닌 현실을 묘사할 수 있다는 용기를 얻었으며, 미국의 산업 발전에서 미국적 정체성을 발견했다.

Pierre Puvis de Chavannes produced 9 murals included The Muses Welcoming the Genius of Enlightenment and Poetry, Philosophy, History and Science for the main Lobby and stairs of Boston Public Library and then installed 2 times in each 1895-1896. These 9 murals are the only public murals installed out of France and in America at that time. That is very significant for the fact that France murals were settled down in America. The concept, style and technique of Puvis’s murals are spreaded over American artists two channels; Puvis’s murals installed in France public institute and murals installed in the Boston Public Library. The murals of Boston Public Library had an act on the figure grouping, application of theme, use of allegory and symbols which is the core subject in Ecole des Beaux-Arts even not going to Europe. American muralists followed the mode of allegory which Puvis represented. Puvis allegory begins with the two times of visit to Italy in 1846 and 1848. American Renaissance muralists copied exactly the pale tone, peaceful acadia scenery and figure in folds which Puvis did. Puvis concerned about the most essential idea for the constitutions of murals when he got commission from the Boston Public Library. Puvis regarded the electricity as American invention and enhanced the American value through the Amerian Industries and technology. American muralists were couraged and found the American identities from the Puvis’s technology theme like Physics.
