인터넷 사용 미술은 현대미술에서 개방적 공동체를 구현할 수 있는 잠재력을 지닌다. 그것 은 네트워크의 개인과 공동체를 공존 가능하게 하는 매체적 특성에 따른 것으로 열린 공동체는 장-뤽 낭시의 무위의 공동체 개념으로 고찰될 수 있다. 이는 네트워크를 통한 열린 공동체가 무 위의 공동체와 열린 형태로 유사하기 때문이다. 락스 미디어 컬렉티브의 <오퍼스>는 디지털 공 유지를 통해 열린 공동체를 추구한다. <오퍼스>는 참여를 원하는 이들이 가능한 참여할 수 있게 하는 온라인 공공 창작 플랫폼으로 이를 위해 자유소프트웨어의 공유와 협업의 방법을 이용한 다. 그러나 <오퍼스>는 미디어 기술지식 등의 문제로 인해 열린 디지털 공유지가 되는데 한계를 가진다. 그럼에도 <오퍼스>는 열린 공동체에의 가능성을 통해 공존, 개방, 포용을 보여준다.

Art using Internet as its medium has the potential to realize an open, embracing community in contemporary art. Internet facilitates the spontaneous creation of virtual forums in which participating individuals can coexist with each other. Opus is an experimental project undertaken by Raqs Media Collective to demonstrate how such Internet-enabled forums, called digital commons, would evolve in art. This study finds that the concept of digital commons as envisaged by Raqs Media Collective in its Opus is analogous to the Jean-Luc Nancy's notion of inoperative community as both concepts are predicated on the people's spontaneous inclination to come together without ulterior motive. Opus has shown that, given a free network platform that supports sharing of ideas, people would spontaneously and willingly join in digital commons for collaborative artworks. Opus has also revealed that the lack of technical knowledge could make a significant limiting factor for digital commons.
