이글은 제1차 진주성전투에 있어서 경상우도관찰사 김성일의 역할을 구명하기 위한 논고이다. 주지하다시피, 진주성전투는 진주목사 김시민 등이 혈투를 전개하여 진주성을 지켰던 승첩으로 알려져 있는데, 이 때 김성일은 경상우도관찰사로사 김시민 등을 지휘하여 전투를 승리로 이끌었다.
초유사로 활동하던 김성일은 경상좌도 관찰사에 임명되어 초유사직에 물러나 잠시 경상우도를 떠났다가 다시 경상우도관찰사로 부임하였다. 그 사이에 개령, 성주에 주둔하고 있는 일본군이 거창 방면을 위협하고 있는 가운데, 부산 창원 방면으로부터 일본군이 진주성을 공격해 왔다.
경상우도 관찰사로 부임한 김성일은 최고의 지휘관으로서 탁월한 역량과 전술운용으로 진주성을 지키는데 큰 역할을 하였다. 김성일은 진주목사 김시민 등을 주축으로 관군 중심의 수성체계를 구축하고, 진주성 외곽에 관군과 의병을 배치하여 구원하게 함으로써 진주성을 공격하도록하는 전략을 운영하여 진주성 방어력을 강화함은 물론, 분산전을 유도하여 일본군의 진주성 공격의 전력을 약화시켜 진주 수성군의 부담을 덜어 주었다. 아울러 포위된 진주성에 화살 등의 물자를 공급하여 줌으로써 전투력을 유지하고 군사의 사기를 높여주었다.
진주성 전투 직후 그는 거창 방면으로 쳐들어 오는 일본군에 대응하기 위하여 삼가로 달려가, 주변 지역의 관군을 거느리고 의병장 김면, 정인홍 등을 도와 이를 막아내었다. 이후 의병장 김면, 정인홍 등은 전라도 의병장인 최경회 임계영 등이 성주, 개령 지역의 일본군을 지속적으로 공격하여, 마침내대 다음해 2월 성주, 개령지역을 수복하였는데, 여기에도 관찰사로서 김성일의 역할이 크게 작용하였던 것으로 생각된다.
결론적으로 진주성전투의 승리는 경상우도의 최고 지휘관이었던 김성일의 전략과 진주성의 수성장이었던 김시민의 절묘한 전술운용, 그리고 각 전투에서 죽음을 무릅쓰고 전투를 수행했던 제장과 사졸의 분전이 어우러진 값진 결과였다. 진주성 전투에서의 승리는 진주성을 지킴으로써 수만의 성내 관민의 목숨을 구한 것은 물론이고, 경상우도가 일본군의 수중에 들어가지 않게 하였으며, 나아가 일본군이 호남으로 진출할 수 있는 길목을 차단하는 성과를 거두었다.

This study's purpose is to investigate the role of Kim Seong-il as a governor of Gyeongsang-u-do in the 1st Jinjuseong battle. As you know, the Jinjuseong battle is known as a great victory of war in which people like Jinju minister, Kim Si-min spread the bloody battle and kept the Jinjuseong. At that time, Kim Seong-il led the battle to victory by directing people like Kim si-min as a governor of Gyeongsang-u-do Province.
Kim Seong-il, who was acting as Choyusa, was appointed to the governor of Gyeongsang Jwa-do and stepped down from the Choyusa's office and left for a while. Then, Kim Seong-il was appointed again as an governor of Gyeongsang-u-do. In the meantime, the forces stationed in Gaeryung and Sungju area threatened the Geochang area, and at the same time, Japanese invaders attacked the Jinju area from Busan and Changwon area.
Kim Seong-il, who was appointed to the governor of Gyeongsang-u-do, played a major role in maintaining the Jinjuseong with excellent ability and tactical management as the best commander. Kim Seong-il established the defense tactic system of castle centered on the government forces with Jinju minister, Kim si-min as the main axis and he deployed government forces and righteous armies on the outskirts of Jinjuseong to make them rescue, and strengthened the Jinjuseong defense by operating a strategy that allowed them to attack the Jinjuseong. In addition, Kim Seong-il induced the best battle and weakened the power of attack of Japanese invaders about Jinjuseong, and relieved the burden of soldiers guarding the Jinjuseong. In addition, he provided supplies of arrows and other materials to the surrounded Jinjuseong, thereby maintained the combat power and enhanced the morale of the military.
Immediately after the Jinjuseong battle, he ran to Samga to cope with the Japanese invaders coming from the direction of Geochang and he blocked the Japanese invaders along with the patriotic army leader Kim Myeon and Jeong In-hong with leading the government forces in the surrounding area. Since then, the patriotic army leader Kim Myeon and Jeong In-hong and others have continuously attacked the Japanese invaders of Sungju and Gaeryung area together with Choi Gyong-hoi and Im Gye-yeong, and finally restored Sungju and Gaeryung areas in February of the following year. In this case, Kim Seong-il's role as governor seems to have played a major role.
In conclusion, the victory of the Jinjuseong battle was the result of Kim Seong-il's strategy, which was the supreme commander of Gyeongsang-u-do, and the exquisite tactical operation of Kim Si-min, who was the general guarding the Jinjuseong, and the best battle of the various generals and soldiers who took part in the battle in every battle. The victory in the Jinjuseong battle saved the lives of tens of thousands of people in the Jinjuseong by keeping Jinjuseong, prevented Gyeongsang-u-do into the hands of Japanese invaders, and furthermore, it was able to block the way in which the Japanese invaders could advance into Honam.
