인간의 행동 원인은 우리들의 내부요인 또는 외부 환경 조견에서 찾아 진다. 이들 두 측면 중에서 외부 보다는 내부요인이 교정을 위해서 더 효과적이라 간 주된다. 왜냐하면, 실업, 경제 사정 같은 외부 조건을 수정하거나 변화시키는 것은 어렵지만, 그에 비해서 동기, 지각, 감정, 태도 같은 내부조건의 훨씬 더 수월 하기 때문이다. 그러나 이런 요인들 각각은 사고와 행동의 원인관계를 극히 제한적 범위에서 설명하게 된다. 내부요인을 종합해서 우리들의 사고와 행동의 원인을 설명하는 것이 성격이론이다. 이것에 많은 이론들이 포함되고 있지만, 대체로 로키안, 칸티안 그리고 이들 두 요인의 혼합이론으로 구분된다. 이들 중에서 로키안 이론은 연상에 근거한 이론이며, 현재 교정현장에서 진행되고 있는 상과 벌에 관한 아이디어의 기초가 된다. 그러나 이것은 과거 지향적이고 그리고 도식에 의해서 행동과 사고가 나타난다는 주장이다. 더욱이 도식은 일생을 통해서 형성된 것이어서 단기적 상과 벌에 의해서 수형자들의 행동을 교정한다는 것은 매우 어렵다. 혼합이론 역시 과거중심이론이기에 로키안 이론 처럼 효과를 기대하기 힘들다. 이런 이론들에 비해서 칸티안 이론은 현재와 미래 중심 이론이다. 그래서 과거 조건과 환경이 문제시 되지 않는다. 이에 더해서 그 이론은 상실된 자유의지를 찾게 하고 그리고 삶의 본질을 이해하도록 돕는다. 그래서 교정현장에 필요한 것은 과거 경험에 더 무게가 실리는 로키안 이론과 혼합 이론 더 적합하다. 현재 교정현장은 과거 어느 때 보다 수형자의 권리를 중시한다. 그런 시대의 흐름에 발마추어서, 구태의연한 상벌제도를 벗어나서 미래 지향적이고, 자유의지에 높은 관심을 갖는 칸티안 이론으로 시야를 넓혀 가야 한다.

The causes of human behaviors and thoughts are found at our external and inner aspects. The latter of the two is more than the former effective for human behaviors to be corrected. Such causes are motivation, attitudes, beliefs, perceptions and the like However that we explain cause of human behaviors with each of these ones is not perspective but narrow. Instead of explaining by each one, personality theories give the comprehensive understanding about ours behaviors and thoughts. The theories are divided into three parts- Lockean, Kantian and the mixes of the two. The first one is related with punishments and reward given at the correctional situations. However the systems conducting on the correctional sites are not satisfactional in the light of the effectiveness. For the more, the theories of Locekan are based on schema. And so in order to change our behaviors and thought, it should be changed. It is formed for our whole life. For this reason, it is impossible that it is changed by a certain temporal method conducting at the currently correctional sites. The Kantian theories strongly emphasize the goal of future and ignore our past experiences and conditions. In addition to those points, the theories help for us to find the lost free will and understand the meaning of life. The acceptable policies asked at correctional sites are from not Lockekan but Kantian theories. The currently correctional sites emphasize the prisoner's right compared with any past time. So the correctional policies are asked to go with the stream of time. The correctional leaders throw away the old systems that are not effective and must turn around their view field into another directions.
