본 연구는 백워드 설계 모형을 적용하여 초등학교 통합단원을 개발함으로써, 백워드 설계 모형이 통합교육과정에 주는 시사점을 도출하는데 연구의 목적이 있다. 우리나라에서는 통합단원 수업이 실시되고 있으나 학생들은 진정한 이해에 도달하지 못하고 있으므로, 이로 인하여 학습 결손이 발생하고 학업성취도를 담보하지 않는 것으로 판단된다. 이 와 같은 문제점을 해결하기 위하여 본 연구는 이해중심 교육과정의 한 원리인 백워드 설계를 제안하여 새로운 방식으로 통합단원을 구성하며, 그 적용 가능성을 탐색하였다. 백 워드 설계는 전통적인 교육과정 설계의 패러다임에서 벗어나 학습 목표를 설정, 평가 계획 수립, 학습 경험 선정의 순으로 수업을 설계하며 평가에 역점을 두는 설계 방법인데, 이는 학생들이 교과목의 진정한 이해에 도달하기 위하여 평가에 역점을 둔다. 본 연구에서는 통합단원을 위해 구안한 백워드 템플릿을 초등학교 현장에서 적용할 수 있도록 수정․보완 하였다. 특히 내러티브를 활용한 단원 개발의 가능성도 동시에 제안해보았다.

As the purpose of developing curriculum, understanding of the knowledge is the fundamental aims in classroom instruction and learning. The purpose of the this study is to derive implications for the integrated curriculum of backward design model. There is an integrated unit lesson in Korea, but students do not reach true understanding. So the student’s learning deficit occurs, and the student’s grades are low. To solve this problem, this study proposed a backward design, which is one of the principles of understanding-oriented curriculum.
The backward design approach allows students to reach a true understanding of the subject. This study applied the integrated unit backward design model to elementary school class. In particular, I proposed the possibility of unit development using narrative.
