우리들이 어떤 대상에 대해서 갖는 이미지는 그에 대한 종합적 평가라고 말들을 한다. 교도소 역시 그러한 맥락에서 이미지를 검토해 볼 필요가 있다. 왜냐하면 교도소애 대한 일반인들의 이미지는 교정이 추구하는 수형자의 재사회화와 직결되는 것은 물론이고, 그것은 수형자의 이미지와 다를 바 없기 때문이다. 그런 의미에서 교도소 이미지 조사를 실시하였다. 응답자들은 강원도 K 대학교 대단위 강좌를 수강하는 198명의 학생들이었으며, 이들을 대상으로 집단조사를 실시하였다. 연구 결과 교도소에 대해서 그리는 이미지가 대체로 좋지 않게 평가되었다. 형용사 변별척도에서 보여준 결과는 응답자들이 교도소에 대해서 부정적이고, 잠재성과 활동성에서도 낮은 것으로 평가하고 있다. 결과적으로 교도소는 좋지 못한 곳이며, 침체되고 활동성 없는 장소로 인식되고 있다. 응답자의 거주 지역에 교도소가 들어오는 것을 반대하는 이유로 지적된 것은 자녀 교육에서 부작용, 부동산 가격 하락, 부정적 정서의 경험 등이었다. 본 연구의 다른 결과들과 형용사 변별척도에서 얻은 결과를 연계해서 보면 응답자들은 특히 교도소에 대해서 두려움 정서를 갖는다. 응답자들이 교도소를 연상하며 스스로가 범죄피해자 또는 공격자가 될 것 같다는 두려움을 느끼고 있다. 본 연구는 소규모로 진행되었고, 이론적 탐색을 심도 있게 진행하지 못했으므로 보다 깊이 있는 연구가 곧 뒤따라야 한다.

The image taken to a certain thing represents a general evaluation about it. Prison is also needed to review in the same content by such ways. Because the good image of prison is the last goal of correctional affairs to seek re-socialization of prisoners. Therefore the image of prison may be very the image of prisoner. For finding such the meaning, this study is processed June in 2007. The respondents were students of K university in Kangwon Province who were involved at the big class having 198 and they responded by group survey in the same time. According to the results of the study, the general evaluation about the prisons is negative, The results showed in the adjective differential scale do not show good images. In the scale, the evaluative category shows the bad image to the prisons and the categories of potency and activity are also evaluated at the low level. In the light of the results, prisons are recognized as bad, hopeless, and motionless. The reasons why respondents oppose for prisons to be located in their residential area are the anxiety of education of children, the decreation in price of real estate and experiences of negative emotion. The other results in this study tell the respondents experience the fear emotion to the prison. Such fear is from that they will be a criminal victims or aggressors in the future, This point is one of the best important results in this study. However, the study is only stayed at pilot level, therefore more expended and theoretical studies is needed for finding the effective results in the near future.
