The Settlement and Changing Process of the Culture of Pottery with Clay Stripes on Jeju Island
The Jeju region developed according to the fast fusion of the culture of pottery with clay stripes that was introduced in the fourth century B.C. based on the old Songgukri culture. This acculturation process led to a large settlement in its northwestern areas. Its southwestern areas witnessed the establishment of an atypical Songgukri-style dwelling, which marked a conversion into a localized style. That is, they built an altered dwelling and made exchanges with the group of pottery with clay stripes for metal instruments, but the pottery with clay striped used in the group's daily life was excluded. As for the settlement process of the group of pottery with clay stripes, they went through the Jaeji process through their active assimilation with the local residents in the northwestern areas. There was no direct fusion between the two groups in the southwestern areas except for the exchanges between their upper classes. While the group of circular pottery with clay stripes was easily assimilated in the northwestern areas, there was no active exchange with the group of pottery with clay stripes in the southwestern areas. As a result, the group of triangular pottery with clay stripes secured a foothold in the northeastern areas, but they shrank in their active domain and had their exchanges with the southwestern areas severed. The pottery with clay stripes became extinct in the Jeju region around the second century in the same way that happened in the southern coastal areas.
