최근 한국영화는 ‘한류’라는 문화적 트렌드를 바탕으로 국내뿐 만 아 니라 아시아를 넘어 유럽, 미주 지역 등 전 세계인의 관심과 환호 속에 다양한 한류문화에 대한 소비 욕구를 촉발하고 있다. 특히 영화는 영화에 담겨있는 영화적인 이야기뿐 만 아니라 영화에 등장하는 배우의 뷰티, 영화적 공간의 일상 문화, 음악 등 특히, 영화음악은 관객들로 하여금 복합적인 정서로 작동되어 한국영화를 더욱 매력적인 호감의 대상으로 견인한다고 해도 과언이 아니다. 매력적인 영화서사의 내러티브는 영상만으로는 완전하게 구축할 수 없어 배우의 사실적 연기, 다양한 영화적인 배경과 장치, 음악을 통한 스토리텔링 등이 포함되어 극적인 내러티브를 구축한다. 특히 음악은 관객들에게 영화의 스토리를 감성적으로 이해할 수 있도록 심리를 자극하여 영화 서사 내러티브를 더욱 극대화하는데 적합하다. 영화 등 모든 예술장르에는 감독이 관객들에게 메시지 전달을 위해 특정 의도를 담은 탄탄한 이야기적 내러티브가 구축되어 있다. 본고는 영화가 탄탄한 스토리를 위해 내러티브를 구축하는 것처럼 영화 OST도 음악적인 내러티브 구축을 위해 관련 창작자들의 태도에 대해 사례분석, 연구하여 영화 서사 내러티브와 OST 내러티브의 상관성을 연구하고자 하였다. 멜로장르의 장편영화인 <가을우체국>을 중심으로 관련 작업자들의 인터뷰와 학술적 이론, 영화의 서사, OST 내러티브 등을 분석하였다. 연구과정에서 학술적, 타 작품 작업자들과의 이견이 있을 수 있지만 본고는 동 영화를 중심으로 하는 한정적인 연구임을 밝히는 바이다. 또 선행연구들을 분석해보면 영화에서 음악의 기능에 대한 다양한 이론들이 근거하고 있지만, 본고는 실제 창작자들의 현장적인 경험을 토대로 연구하는 질적 연구이다. 영화 OST 작업자들은 음악의 객관적 이론과 대중문화의 특수성을 감안하여 당시의 트렌드 등과 창의적인 자기 주관이 적극 반영될 수밖에 없는 작업의 특수성을 가지고 있다. 이러한 특수성을 감안한 영화 OST 작업은 감독의 연출의도가 담긴 영상 과 소리가 각각의 내러티브를 가지고 있지만 결국 전체 영화 스토리 관점에서 하나의 주제로 연결된다는 작업의 관계성에 대해 기술하였다. 다 시 말해서 영화에서 재현된 영상이미지와 음악이 각각의 개체적 이미지가 아닌 하나의 통합적인 사유이미지를 재현한다는 말이다. 감독은 관객들에게 영상이미지만으로 의미 해독을 제시하기 보다는 음악과 더불어 재현되는 통합이미지를 해독할 수 있도록 OST를 보다 적극적이고 다양한 방법으로 활용할 필요가 있다.

Lately Korean cinema became a big part of Korean Wave, and has been widely accepted with acclaims in Asia, Europe and America. What attracts the audience in cinema is not just story but also the beauty of the actors, the unique culture of the locations, and above all the movie music. The successful narrative in cinema is established not only by picture but also by the acting, the cinematic location, and the music.
Music in particular plays a major role in the communication by its immense power to stimulate the audience’s psychology emotionally. Every art including cinema has its own story narrative which aims at delivering the artist’s message to the audience. As story establishes narrative in cinema, its OST also creates its own narrative. This study enlightens the interrelationship between story narrative and OST narrative.
The melodramatic movie <Autumn Sonata> has become the case study for the thesis of this study. The interviews with its filmmakers as well as the research in story narrative and OST narrative has been carried out. There have been many theoretical studies on the function of music in cinema. Unlike them, my study in this paper is based on practical experience of the filmmakers.
The composers of OST have their own voices in their creation as the directors have their own thoughts in their story. What’s important here is both the narrative of OST and the narrative of story must serve harmoniously in order to make clear the vision of the movie. In other words the visual image and the music in cinema are not two in dependent components, but are the unified whole. Directors must not solely rely on visual storytelling. They must make use of the aural storytelling as well in order to reach a successful communication with the audience.
