오늘날 21세기 산업 디자인환경에서의 기술은 디자인의 가치, 기업의 정체성 그리고 시장에서의 경쟁관계를 좌우하는 중요한 변수로 작용하고 있다. 또한 핀버그의 주장대로 기술이 인간의 삶 모든 부분에서 의심 없이 수용되는 문화지평(cultural horizon)으로서 의미를 지니고 있다. 따라서 기술은 곧 시장에서의 독점적 지위내지는 권력을 의미하며, 기술에 대한 믿음은 종교와도 같은 의미를 지니게 된다. 그러나 완성된 기술로 인해 사회·경제·문화 그리고 지역적 불균형과 노동현장에서 종속관계가 강화되고 있는 실정이다. 그에 따라 기계와 기술 그리고 디자인에 대한 반성적 요구와 지속가능한 디자인을 위한 인식적 사고에 대한 필요성이 대두되고 있다. 본 연구는 산업디자인에서 요구되는 핵심 요소인 기술에 대한 논의로부터 시작된다. 이를 위해 제2 단원에서는 기술에 대한 비판적 입장을 추구하는 앤드류 핀버그의 기술철학을 중심으로 기술이 수반되는 디자인이 나아갈 방향에 대하여 고민하고자 하였다. 또한 논지(論旨)를 전개하기 위해 핀버그의 기술 철학을 구성하는 기술비판주의, 구성주의, 기술 헤게모니 그리고 기술 민주화의 개념을 파악하였다. 이에 근거하여 제3 단원에서는 21세기 산업디자인이 추구해야할 기술적 경계와 그를 위한 인식적 사고의 내용과 범위에 대하여 고찰하였다.

In today's 21st century industrial design environment, technology is an important variable that determines the value of design, corporate identity and market competitiveness. In addition, as Feenberg argues, technology is acting as a cultural horizon that is accepted in all parts of human lives. Thus, technology effectively means securing monopoly status or power in the market while belief in technology acts as a religion. However, due to the completion of technology, social, economic, cultural and regional imbalances are worsened while the subordinate relations are further strengthened in labor sites. Accordingly, there is an increasing demand for reflections regarding machinery, technology and design and there is recognition about the need to have a cognitive thinking for sustainable design. This study starts with a discussion of technology, a key element required in industrial design. To this end, Chapter 2 focus on the technical philosophy of Andrew Feenberg, who takes on a critical perspective on technology, to search for the future way of design with technology. In addition, in order to develop the argument, we have grasped the concept of technical criticism, constructivism, technical hegemony, and technology democratization, which constitute Feenberg's studies on technology. Based on this, Chapter 3 examines the technical boundaries of the 21st century industrial design and the content and scope of cognitive thinking for those boundaries.
