The current study investigates the relationship between the mothers’ belief and participation in their children’s play and the children’s excessive immersion in smartphone use, in order to find desirable roles that can be played by the contemporary parents of children and good play instruction methods. In order to achieve this end, two hundred sixty-seven mothers of children between the ages three and five were surveyed regarding their beliefs and participation in play, as well as the smartphone immersion level of their children; the correlation of these two results were analyzed in the current study. The results indicate that first, the mothers’ belief in supporting the play activities of their children was higher than the mothers’ belief in focusing on their children’s learning activities; despite the high belief in supporting play activities, actual participation of the mothers in their children’s play activities was low. Second, the mothers’ employment status, number of children, monthly income, and education level were variables that caused differences in their belief in supporting play activities. The birth order of the child also had an effect on the frequency of participation in play. In addition, the levels of children’s smartphone immersion were significantly different depending on the age of the mothers. Third, the mothers’ belief in supporting their children’s play and the smartphone immersion of the children were found to have a negative correlation, while the mothers’ belief in focusing on their children’s learning activities and children’s immersion in smartphone use were positively correlated. In addition, children’s immersion in smartphone use was lower when weekday and weekend playtimes, frequency of mothers’ participation in play activities, and intensity of mothers’ participation in play activities were higher.
