일본의 개신교회가 식민지 조선에 존재했었다는 사실은 한국이나 일본의 기독교 사학자들에게도 잘 알려지지 않았거나 혹은 무시되어 왔다. 조선에 살았던 일본인 기독교인들의 활동과 행동, 사상, 조선인 기독교인들과 어떤 관계를 맺었는가 하는 문제는 일본의 기독교, 일본의 종교 정책, 그리고 식민지 조선의 기독교를 이해하는 데에 그간 알려지지 않았던 점을 드러낸다. 그들 스스로의 인식 여부와 상관없이 일본인 기독교인들은 식민지주의 및 기독교의 행위자였던 것이다. 이러한 문제에 답을 찾기 위해서 본고는 '일본기독교회'(日本基督教会)의 활동에 의해 식민지 조선에 세워진 교회를 특정하였다. 일본기독교회가 발간한 신문 및 출판물, 그리고 식민지 조선의 다른 문헌과 정황을 검토하여 필자는 조선에서의 일본기독교회가 어떻게 시작되고 진행되었으며, 또한 그 대부분이 일본인 식민자들의 교회였을 뿐, 함께 사는 조선인들의 '이웃'이 되지는 못했음을 드러내고자 한다. 황민화 정책이 강화되었을 때 조선과 일본의 기독교는 연합하고 이후로 통합이 되어 일본의 패전까지 지속되었다. 한편 일본인 기독교인들이 남긴 재산의 일부는 몇몇 조선의 교회가 설립되는데 토대가 되었다.

The fact that Japanese Protestant churches existed in colonial Korea has been almost unknown or ignored by the Christian historians both in Korea and Japan. The activities, behaviors, thoughts, and the relationship with Koreans of those Japanese Christians are very crucial issues. They suggest new aspects to understand the Christianity of Japan, the religious policy of Japanese Empire and the Christianity of colonial Korea, for the Christian faith of a specific person, community or even a nation reveals itself more clearly in the context of foreign culture. Whether they had recognized it or not, the Japanese Christians in colonial Korea were the agents of colonialism and Christianity. To find an answer to those issues this essay specified a group of Japanese churches in colonial Korea formed by the evangelism of the Church of Christ in Japan (CCJ, Nihonkirisutokyōkai). Examining the newspapers and other publications published by CCJ and considering the materials and the situations of colonial Korea, I demonstrate that the CCJ in Korea were mostly churches of Japanese colonists not being ‘neighbors’ of neighboring Koreans. Under the umbrella of imperialization (皇民化kōminka) policy since 1937, the two national churches in Korea became united until Japanese Empire surrendered at the WWII. The properties Japanese Christians left after the war, however, became foundations for the establishment of some Korean churches.
