T. S. 엘리엇의 대표작인 황무지에는 다양한 신화적 요소가 혼재한다. 제임스 프레이져의 『황금가지』를 비롯, 제시 웨스턴의 『제식에서 로맨스로』에 등장하는 고대의 희생제의 의식과 중세의 신화까지 매우 다양한 신화적 요소들이 공존한다. 이러한 대표적인 신화들과는 달리, 비록 엘리엇이 명시하지는 않았지만, 『황무지』에는 또 하나의 의미 있는 신화적 요소를 발견할 수 있는데, 그것은 바로 토성신화라고 할 수 있다. 간단하게 말한다면, 토성신화는 보편적인 아버지와 아들의 갈등관계가 심리적으로 재현된 구조를 가지고 있다. 세익스피어의 『햄릿』을 비롯, 그리스 신화의 제우스와 크로노스의 서사는 물론, 프로이트의 오이디프스 콤플렉스에 이르기까지 토성신화가 가지고 있는 아버지와 아들의 관계에 대한 상징성은 매우 광범위하게 나타난다. 이런 관점에서 『황무지』에서 토성신화가 차지하는 의미를 살펴보는 것은 매우 의미 있는 작업이라고 할 수 있다. 엘리엇이 『황무지』의 가장 중요한 인물이라고 설명했던 티레지아스의 존재나, 『햄릿』과 내용적인 유사성을 가지고 있는 토마스 키드(Thomas Kyd)의 『스페인 비극』 등과 같은 요소들은 명백히 그 저변에 토성신화의 원형이라고 할 수 있는 아버지와 아들의 관계에 대한 상징성을 가지고 있으며, 이것은 작품이 담고 있는 가장 근원적인 정서인 멜랑콜리를 표현하는 데 상당한 기여를 하고 있다.

T. S. Eliot’s The Waste Land contains a mixture of various mythological elements. There is a wide variety of mythological factors including James Fraser’s Golden Bough and the ancient ritual of sacrifice in Jessie Weston’s From Ritual to Romance. Unlike these typical myths, although Eliot did not specify, there is another significant myth in The Waste Land. That would be the myth of Saturn. In short, the Saturn myth implies a psychological relationship between a universal father and a son. Symbols about the relationship between father and son have appeared in various works of literature from Greek mythology to Shakespeare’s Hamlet. From this point of view, it is very meaningful to look at the meaning of Saturn's mythology in The Waste Land. One of the most important figures in The Waste Land is the existence of Tiresias, the allusions to Hamlet, and Thomas Kyd’s Spanish Tragedy are all contributing to resuscitating the deeply embedded Saturn myth to the point of its being interpreted as one of the most significant symbolic frames in The Waste Land.
