본 연구는 과외 스포츠활동이 여자중학생들의 신체적 자기개념에 미치는 효과를 검증하기 위하여 학년별, 1회 참여시간, 주당 참여빈도에 따라 신체적 자기개념을 분석하였다. 연구 대상자는 Y시에 소재하는 J여자중학교 1, 2, 3학년 학생들 중 방과 후 과외 스포츠활동에 참가하는 학생들 267명이었으며, 신체적 자기개념 수준은 10개의 하위요인으로 구성된 한국어판 PSDQ(Physical Self-Description Questionnaire)를 이용하여 자료를 수집하였고, 다변량 분산분석(MANOVA)을 사용하였다. 분석결과 학년에 따라 체지방, 외모, 자기존중감 요인에서 그룹별 차이가 있었으며 3학년이 1, 2학년보다 높은 수준으로 자신을 인식하고 있었다. 1회 참여시간에 따라 스포츠유능감, 건강, 신체활동, 지구력, 신체전반에서 그룹간 차이가 있었으며, 1시간 이상 참여하는 집단이 다른 집단보다 자신의 신체를 높게 평가하고 있었다. 주당 참여빈도에 따라 스포츠유능감, 건강, 신체활동, 자기존중감, 유연성, 지구력에서 그룹간 차이가 있었으며, 주당 참여빈도가 많은 집단이 자신의 신체를 높게 평가하고 있었다.

This study was conducted to verify the effects of extracurricular sports on physical self-concept by girls’ middle school students. The physical self-concept was analyzed by school years, statures, weights, weekly participation frequencies, duration of one-time participation, and sport events. A total of 267 students in the 1st, 2nd and 3rd grade at "J" girls’ middle school, who were currently participating in extracurricular sports activities responded to the questionnaires. The level of physical self-concept was evaluated based on the Korean version of Physical Self-Description Questionnaire(PSDQ) composed with 10 sub-factors. And the data were analyzed with χ2-test and one-way ANOVA. The findings based on the socio-demographic characteristics showed that they preferred to exercise 1-2 times a week, and they usually exercise for 30 min.-1 hour at a time ,and they most preferred to run(walk). The analysis by school year indicated difference in fat mass, appearance and self-respect factors and the junior grade students felt higher self-concept than senior grade students in general. By stature, the taller students felt higher self-concept. By weights, there was a difference in fat mass, self-respect and endurance factors and the lower weighted, the higher self-concept in general. By participation frequency per week, there was a difference in competency, health, physical activity, flexibility, endurance and muscular strength factors and the more frequently participating, the higher self-concept. By duration of one-time participation, there was a difference in competency, health, physical activity, endurance and body, and the 30 min.-1 hour exercising group had higher self-concept. By the sport events, there was a difference by group in appearance and physical activities factors and ball players had higher self-concept than others.
