The Densho Delegation was a group of young Japanese boys visiting Europe organized from February 20, 1582 (Densho 10) to July 21, 1590 (Densho 18) by Alessandro Valignano, a local patrol in East India sent by the Jesuits. This was meant to increase awareness in the Universal Church and European people about the growing Japanese community of believers and to inspire the concept of mission while providing the Japanese believers a sense of pride and empowering them for future missions. The boys were relatives of the potent Kirishitan daimyo of the Kyushu region and became the very first seminarists of the first seminary established by Valignano in Arima. The boys’ visit to Europe did not see much light under the new Japanese regime that in the meantime had changed but it became the starting point to prevent Japan not to hesitate to open its doors to the West. At the same time, it became an important opportunity for the Universal Church to think deeply about the mission field and how to dispatch and educate missionaries.
