본 연구의 목적은 동와 조휘진(1729-1797)의 생애와 활동을 밝히는 일이다. 일반적으로 正祖가 남명 조식에게 사제(賜祭)하였던 시기를 남명학 부흥의 시발점으로 일컫는데, 그는 이때 남명학파의 중심인 덕천서원을 대표하는 인물이었다. 따라서 각종 진주 관련 지리지에 그의 이름이 기재되어 있고, 출중한 인물로 많은 인물과 교유하고 있었음을 밝히고 있으나 자세한 연구가 이루어진 바가 아직 없다.
그의 집안은 대대로 함안에 세거하였다. 조선 건국 후 출사를 거부하고 함안에 은거하였던 趙悅, 단종 때의 생육신 가운데 한 사람이었던 趙旅, 임진왜란 때 순사한 趙宗道가 그의 선조이다. 그는 평소 효를 실천함과 동시에 선조의 忠을 드러낸 것 역시 효의 실천으로 보았다. 선조 열 명의 업적을 기록한 『趙氏十忠實錄』은 그 결과물이라 할 수 있다.
아울러 남명학의 전수자로서 덕천서원을 중심으로 유림을 규합하는 역할을 하였다. 그의 문집인 『東窩遺集』에 보이는 창화시 및 만사를 통해 그의 교유범위가 퇴계학파와 중앙의 남인까지 포괄하고 있음을 확인할 수 있다. 기개와 절조를 숭상하고 處士的인 학풍을 견지하던 남명학파의 유풍을 그대로 견지하였던 인물이라 평가할 수 있다.

The goal of this study is to examine the life and activities of Cho Hwijin (1729-1797). Although the revival of Nammyeong studies is attributed to King Chongjo holding funeral rites for Cho Sik, Cho was the leading figure of Dŏkchŏn Academy, the center of the Nammyŏng school. Thus his name was mentioned in many geographical treatises on Jinju, and his talent earned him the company of many other famous figures. However, no detailed investigation of his life exists.
Cho’s family lineage was based in Haman. His ancestors included Cho Yŏl, who refused a government post and lived as a recluse in Haman, Cho Ryŏ, one of the six surviving ministers, and Cho Chongdo, who lost his life fighting in the Imjin War. Cho regularly practiced filial piety and considered publicizing the loyalty of his ancestors as part of this, resulting in the Veritable Record of the Ten Loyal Chos (Chossi shipch'ung shillok, 趙氏十忠實錄).
Moreover, as a successor of the Nammyeong school, he was instrumental in making Deokcheon Academy a local nexus for Confucian scholars. The exchange poetry and eulogies in his work, Writings of Tongwa (Tongwajib), demonstrates the breadth of his network, which included those from the T’oegye school to the capital’s Southerners. In sum, Cho was a conscientious and virtuous recluse scholar who carried on the traditions of the Nammyŏng school.
