대개 작가의식은 작가라는 주체의 통일된 의식으로 규정된다. 작가의식이 이전과 다른 양상으로 나타날 때 그것은 ‘작가의식의 변화’로 간주된다. 그러나 이 관점으로는 상호 모순적으로 드러나는 작가의식들을 설명하기가 어렵다. 김동리의 경우 무녀도 개작 과정이나 기독교 소재 소설들에서 작가의식의 균열이 나타난다. 자아의 모순성이 단순한 병리적 현상이 아니라면 원래부터 자아는 하나로 단순화할 수 없는 주체일 수 있다. 일반적으로 각 텍스트는 그 나름의 특징을 가진 것으로 비춰지는데, 그것은 하나로 통일된 작가의식으로 보기 어렵다. 이 글은 텍스트 창작 과정을 작가의 정체성을 점유하기 위한 조각 작가들의 경합 과정으로 본다. 조각 작가는 작가의 경험을 통해 각기 다른 조각 작가들로 생성되고 작가의 자아 내부에서 먼저 생성된 조각 작가들과 합치되거나 갈등을 일으킨다. 이러한 현상의 근본 원인은 인간이 자신이 원하는 방향으로만 경험할 수는 없다는 사실에 있다.

A writer’s stream of consciousness is mostly defined as a unified and unilinear subject. It is considered to be changed when it diverges from an earlier point of view. However, we cannot explain why contradictions arise within the stream of consciousness using this perspective. Kim Dong-li’s five different versions of Munyeodo and novels related to Christianity demonstrate this. His various versions of texts are not an effect of change but that of competition between multiple streams of consciousness. It has also been treated as a part of schizophrenia in many cases. But Kim Dong-li is not schizophrenic. If it is not pathological in nature, there can be multiple streams of consciousness, although the concept itself is based on only one. It cannot be simplified as a singular concept. Literary texts are mutually exclusive even when they are written by a single writer. The purpose of this thesis is to explain that writers do not have a singular stream of consciousness.
