풍경식 ‘자연’에 펼쳐진 무대에서 연주되는 모든 음악으로 정의될 수 있는 19세기 독일 정원음악 은 도시의 산업화로 독일 도처에 정원이 들어서면서부터 탄생된다. 이에 시민들은 도심의 좁고 밀 집된 실내공간에서 이루지 못한 ‘감성적 활동’을 자연에서 음악활동으로 시도하여 정원음악이 보급 된다. 당시 가벼운 작품들로 구성된 정원음악으로는 심포니, 접속곡, 춤곡, 합창, 민요 등이 선호되 며 정원악기로는 플롯, 기타, 리라기타, 에올스하프, 하프, 타악기 그리고 관악기그룹 등이 사용되어 진다. 그리고 '즉흥적 표현들', 풍부한 음향 그리고 감상적 선율 등으로 정원음악의 다양한 특징들이 표현되어진다. 이런 정원음악은 19세기 독일 시민들의 생활공간으로 확장되어진 정원문화의 결과물 로 자연의 시각적 그리고 음악의 청각적 소통을 잠재로 한 개인의 ‘생활정서음악’이자 타인과 함께 즐길 수 있는 ‘오락음악’으로 사회적 가치를 갖는다. 따라서 19세기 독일 정원은 정원 그 자체의 의 미와 그에 따른 공간이 정원의 기능성을 높이면서 독일 시민들의 음악문화에 새로운 가능성을 제공 하여 자연이라는 공간에서 기대할 수 있는 ‘문화적 소리’를 담아낸 정원음악의 보편성을 성립시킨다.

The 19th century German gardenmusic can be defined as all the music played on the stage in landscape ‘nature’, is created by the industrialization of the city throughout Germany. In this context, citizens try to make 'emotional activities' that can not be achieved in the narrow and dense indoor space of the city as a music activity in nature. So, the gardenmusic spread throughout Germany. Some of the musical compositions composed of light works include symphonies, dance work, choral work, folk music, potpourri are preferred as gardenmusic at the time. And garden instruments are flutes, guitars, lyraguitars, aeolsharps, harps, percussion instruments, and wind instruments group. Various features of gardenmusic are represented by 'spontaneous expressions', abundant sounds, and sentimental melodies. This gardenmusic as entertainment music and emotional music of life holds social value for 19th century German citizens. Thus, 19th century Germany gardens establish the universality of gardenmusic with the 'cultural sounds' that can be expected in the space of nature by providing new possibilities for music culture to citizens.
