이 연구는 대한민국에서 국제난민지원단체를 설립하고 20여 년간 난민 보호활동을 하고 있는 이호택 대표의 생애사 연구이다. Atkinson(1998a, 1998b)의 내러티브 탐구의 생애 이야기 면담 방법으로 7회에 걸쳐 생애사 텍스트를 생성하고, Adriansen(2012)이 제시한 ‘타임라 인 면담 분석’으로 코딩한 후, Lieblich 등(1998)이 제시한 ‘통합적 내용 접근’으로 리코딩 했다. 그의 생애 이야기의 독자성을(Lieblich et al., 1998) 일곱 가지 주제 곧, 난민처럼 인생의 가장 약한 지점에서 시작되는 이야기, 활동가의 길을 가게 한 생의 분기점과 결정적 만남, 대한민국 소수자 보호활동의 개척사를 쓴 개척자, 타인을 위해 생명을 나누고자 하는 사명자, 세상을 이해하며 삶이 뒷받침되는 공부를 추구하는 이유, ‘난민들의 피난처’라는 의미, 대한민국 활동가로서의 생애 비전과 좌우 이념을 오가는 통합 방식 등으로 구성할 수 있었다. 대한민국 1세대 난민 활동가의 생애사를 통해 대한민국 사회에서 난민 코드를 탈북 코드와의 접합 속에서 개인적, 구조적으로 정당화할 수 있었다.

This research is on the life history study of Ho-Taek Lee, who established the international refugee support organization in Korea and has protected refugees for 20 years. Narrative texts were generated using the Atkinson’s life story interview method(1998a, 1998b). For the data collection, seven interviews were conducted. The time line analysis of the story was coded as proposed by Adriansen(2012), and re-coded using Lieblich et al.’s integrated content approach (1998). There were seven themes in Lee’s life that made it unique: A story that began at the weakest point like refugees, a crucial encounter and the turning point of life that led to Lee becoming an worker, a pioneer for minority protection activities in the history of South Korea, a missionary who wants to share his life with and for others, his reasons for understanding the world and pursuing a life integrated with study, the meaning of what shelter is for refugees, and an integrated approach to the right and left ideals in his vision as a Korean worker. Through the life history of the first-generation refugee worker in Korea, the connection between refugees and the North Korean refugees in both the individual and structural contexts was confirmed.
