경상우도의 함양에 연고를 둔 덕곡 조승숙은 려말⋅선초를 주요 활동기로 삼아 불사이군으로 표방되는 시대정신을 실천한 충절의 인물이다. 정몽주의 문인이었던 조승숙은 포은과 정치적 노선을 같이하여, 고향인 덕곡촌으로의 귀은을 통해 항절 의지를 실행에 옮기게 된다. 조승숙은 귀은에 돌입한 이래로 강학활동을 전개함으로써, 맹자가 운위한 대장부 정신을 몸소 구현하기도 하였다. 차후 덕곡공파의 파조로 옹립된 조승숙이 남긴 일련의 행적들은, 이 문중의 후손들의 뇌리에 유의미한 삶의 전범으로 각인되기에 이른다.
이러한 정황은 범 덕곡공파 차원에서 간행된 문중용 교훈서인 『함안조씨언행록』를 통해서도 분명하게 확인되는바, 총 5편으로 이뤄진 이 책은 후손 68 인이 선보인 귀감이 될 만한 행적들을 발취하여 재구성한 텍스트다. 조승숙은 시조 조정과 입향조 조영준 및 부친 조경과 함께 ｢제1편｣에 소속되어 있다. 조승숙의 경우 이 서책 전체를 통해 가장 많은 서술 공간을 획득하였고, 또 ‘선생’이라는 호칭을 구사한 정황 등으로 미뤄 볼 때 언행록의 직접적인 연원을 제공해 준 상징적인 인물임이 간취된다. 『함안조씨언행록』은 선생⋅관직 명⋅호⋅‘휘□□’라는 네 종류의 호칭법을 구사하고 있다.
한편 계묘본 언행록은 파별로 나뉘어 독립적인 서술체계를 유지했던 기존 『언행록』 체제를 초극하기 위해 ‘연대(年代)⋅연기(連記)’라는 새로운 편집 원 칙을 적용한 점이 주목된다. 또한 『함안조씨언행록』은 범 덕곡공파 후손들을 대상으로 하여 효우⋅충절⋅학문⋅청렴성⋅위민의식 등과 같은 보편적인 인물 선정 기준을 적용함으로써, 문중적⋅폐쇄적 한계성을 극복하고 극히 보편적인 가치를 담지한 텍스트로 거듭날 수 있었다.

This study looks into the brief history of Dukgok Jo Seungsuk, one of the 72 Doomoondong scholars(杜門洞72賢) during Goryeo Dynasty(高麗朝), who retreated back to his home village, Dukgok(德谷村) where he built Gyosujeong Pavilion(敎授亭) to bring up younger disciples and did not come back out into the world, keeping fidelity(節義) throughout his lifetime when Goryeo Dynasty collapsed.
During his official service, he learned Confucianism from Poeun(圃隱) Jeong Mongjoo(鄭夢周) and then when Goryeo Dynasty collapsed, he judged that he couldn't be a subject of Chosun Dynasty(朝鮮朝) due to his motto of ‘no service to two kings(不事二君)’, and came down to his home village, Dukgok, where he lived a hermit`s life.
Record of Haman Jo Family's Sayings & Deeds is a book written to teach Jo's families and descendants, building on the traces of Jo Seungsuk's life, by describing rigidly-selected exemplary deeds of as many as 68 descendants. This book was written based on the criteria such as love for one's parents(孝,) brotherly love(友), fidelity, integrity and caring for people(爲民). Especially Record of Haman Jo Family's Sayings & Deeds published in 1963 applied a new compiling principle of period and continual description(連記). As a result, it has become a model text to teach ethics to all of Dukgok families with higher degree of perfection than the existing system of those published by each clan.
