이 논문은 장이머우의 대표작인 영화 《인생》이 도달한 미덕을 ‘중국 현대사에 대한 준엄하고 따뜻한 통찰’이라는 측면과, 이런 통찰이 ‘중국인의 심성에 썩 어울리는 방식’으로 절묘하게 표현되었다는 두 가지 측면에 초점을 맞추어 살펴보았다. 필자는 ‘중국인의 심성에 썩 어울리는 방식’이라는 표현을 “말하고자 하는 바를 겉으로 분명하게 드러내기보다는 속에 담아서 넌지시 암시하기”라는 의미로 사용했다. 이를 바꾸어 말하면 루쉰이 일찍이 모든 문예의 보편적 표현법이라고 정의했던 ‘광의의 상징주의’라고도 할 수 있겠다. 이런 측면에서 바라보면, 영화 《인생》은 기구한 운명에 의해서 빚어진 혈육의 비극으로 점철된 푸구이라는 한 가족의 역사를 그려낸 것이면서, 그것이 동시에 파란만장한 정치적 운동에 의해서 빚어진 사회적 비극으로 충만한 중국민족의 현대사에 대한 서술이기도 하다. 장이모우가 그의 영화 ‘인생’에서 이러한 ‘광의의 상징주의’를 어떤 방식으로 그리고 왜 사용하였는지에 대해서 이 글에서 분석하고 논의해보았다. 또한 장이머우의 영화 《인생》과 위화의 소설 《인생》을 영화와 소설이라는 서로 다른 예술형태 사이의 관계, 영화감독 장이머우와 소설가 위화 사이의 관계, 그 공통성과 차별성에 대해서도 살펴보았다. 한 인간이 격동의 시대를 헤쳐 나오며 겪는 고통스러운 운명을 그리고 있다는 점에서 소설과 영화가 서로 비슷하지만, 소설은 주인공 푸구이가 자신의 극단적으로 불운한 일생을 인생의 황혼에서 깨달음을 얻은 소박하고도 초월적인 시선으로 가뿐하게 돌아보는 방식을 취함으로써 그 철학․사상적 의미를 강조하고 있는 반면, 영화는 배경으로 설정된 기구한 역사의 소용돌이 속에서 가산을 탕진하고 몰락한 푸구이가 고통스럽게 몸부림치는 운명을 비극적으로 그려냄으로써 중국 민족 전체의 운명을 은유하여 나름의 사회역사적 지향을 분명히 했다고 할 수 있겠다.

This thesis studied Zhang Yi mou's representative movie Life(活着) focusing on two aspects. One of them is 'rigorous but sympathetic insight through modern Chinese history' and the other is 'description well matched to Chinese people's character'. 'Description well matched to Chinese people's character' means 'allusive remark instead of talking directly', and in other words this is what Luxun defined as general way of expression in all literature: 'symbolism in broad meaning'. The technique or art of communication expressing the idea by 'between the lines' and understanding what it really means nonetheless is one of the important keys to understand Chinese people's character and Chinese culture. At this point of view, the movie Life can be read as not only personal history of Fugui(福貴) who led rough and tragic life in the middle of upheaval Chinese history, but the history of whole Chinese people who underwent modern Chinese history full of tragic incidents. It was discussed and analyzed how Zhang Yi mou used 'symbolism in broad meaning' in his movie Life and why. The differences and similarities between the movie Life directed by Zhang Yi mou and the novel Life written by Yuhua(余華) were also considered in this thesis. Both the novel and the movie described the fortune of a man who got through turbulent times. But the novel stressed Fugui's philosophical reflection about his life after suffering all the unfortunate things happened through his lifetime, the movie emphasized socio-historical experience of Chinese people represented by Fugui and his family amid fluctuation of Chinese history.
