이 글은 反求堂 林汝栢(1614~1685)의 시세계를 살펴보고, 그것이 그의 內省的 학적 지향과 反求의 정신에서 비롯했음을 확인하고자 서술되었다. 반구당은 17세기 중반을 살았던 영남의 지식인으로서, 時命 의 불운으로 폐거한 뒤 지역의 학인들과 교류하며 士人을 가르치는 일에 전념하였다. 그의 삶의 행적은 『反求堂集 』(필사본)으로 수렴되어 전하며, 아직 본격적인 연구가 이뤄지지 않은 인물이다. 이 논고는 그의 문집을 일견한 뒤에 적은 摘記에 지나지 않는다. 특히 그의 시세계가 갖고 있는 특징을 중심으로, 그의 시적 논리를 추적하고자하였다. 반구당의 시를 살펴보면 두 가지 情調 사이에서 갈등하고 있음을 볼 수 있다. 그는 ‘偶吟’의 방식을 통하여 갈등하는 내면을 진솔하게 토로하고 있는 바, 우울한 분위기에서 자신의 상황을 禍로까지 생각하는 마음과 그 안에서도 수긍하고 안온하게 여기는 마음을 읽을 수 있다. 이런 갈등은 ‘霖雨’를 대상으로 지은 시에서도 나란히 노출된다. 그러나 이런 갈등하는 마음은 독서를 통한 自警的 주체의 정립으로 시적 승화를 이룬다. 이는 그의 내적 성찰을 위주로 하는 反求의 정신과 연관된 것으로 여겨진다. 차후 이와 관련하여 반구당의 학술적 담론들에 대한 별도의 논구를 통해, 그의 17세기 조선지성사에서의 위치가 확인될 것으로 기대된다.

This article is to examine the poems of Lim Yeo-baek (1614~1685). He was an intellectual who lived in Yeongnam in the mid-17th century. He lived an unfortunate life and quit studying in the past. He was committed to teaching juniors while interacting with local scholars. This is the first paper on his poetry. His poetry is in conflict between two emotions. He expresses emotion honestly through the way of 'comfort create a poem'. On the one hand, he was depressed and thought that he was in disaster, and on the other hand he accepted and comfortable. This conflict is the same in poetry built on the rainy landscape, but this emotional conflict is sublimated into a new form through reading, an intellectual who is wary of and reflects on himself. The reason for that is probably related to the spirit he reflected on, the spirit of reflection. It is necessary to review his academic discourse and discuss his mental world in earnest. Also is necessary to study his position in the 17th century Chosun intellectual history.
