수긍재 하천일은 대대로 명문가인 진양하씨 판윤공파 집안에서 출생하여 40세의 짧은 생을 살았던 인물이다. 짧았던 생과 자료 부족으로 인해 그의 생애는 지금까지 정확하게 알려지지 못했다. 그러나 『수긍재유집』에 실린 詩文과 『송정집』의 ｢연보｣ 등에 산견되는 자료를 토대로 생애와 삶을 조명해 볼 수 있다. 그의 詩作에서는 형 송정 하수일, 동생 매헌 하경휘와 함께 화락한 모습으로 형제간의 우의를 다지던 때와 임진왜란의 참상과 현실에 대해 개탄하는 모습, 생의 마지막 바람을 담은 도산에서의 은일 등을 살펴볼 수 있다. 그의 시는 과하지 않은 절제된 감정으로 간결하며 평이한 표현을 통해 누구나 공감할 수 있는 인간의 내면을 담담한 필치로 그려내었다. 거기에는 40년 동안 짧은 삶에서 맺어진 진한 형제애와 세상사와 인간사에 대한 깊은 이해와 哲理 가 담겨 있으며, 생에 대한 소박한 바람이 담겨있다. 우리는 수긍재의 짧은 생이 보여준 삶의 궤적을 통하여 화락하고 우의가 넘치는 가정에서 태어나 자신의 뜻을 펼치던 한 젊은 지식인이 전쟁을 겪으며 쇠약해지고, 세상의 변고를 수용하며 현실에 적응해 가는 변화과정을 읽을 수 있다.

Sugeungjae Hacheon-il was born to a Pan Yun Gongpa family in Jinyangha, a prominent family member, and lived a short life at the age of 40. He showed deep brotherhood with his elder brother Song Jeong, Ha Soo-il, and younger brother Maeheon, Ha Kyung-hwi, cementing friendship in a friendly manner. Although he was registered as a guest of a man after passing on his sad history to Ha Hang, Jongjo's uncle, he did not achieve any academic achievements due to his short life, and because of his subtlety in the poem, 17 poems tell him how he was doing. His seventeen poems are fortunate to have a starting year at a few, which shows the three brothers' friendships and the horrors of the war together. He suffered considerable hardships during the Japanese Invasion of Korea in 1592, and after the war was settled, he was expelled from the Sangun Docheok chamber, but gave up his intention to the world and ended the rest of his life in Dosan, where the reason for his brother-in-law's death was occupied. The reason why he chose to live in the city was because he thought it was a land of scenic beauty and benefits. He hoped to live a leisurely and friendly life with nature here. But he died in the winter of that year, when he had chosen to live in bankruptcy, leaving such a wind behind.
