예로부터 인간은 신과 교감을 하기 위한 매개체로 향을 이용해왔다. 인간은 신을 감지(感知)의 대상으로 보고 자신의 감각인 후각을 통해 신의 아름다움을 인식하고자 했다. 그러나 18세기에 이르러 향수는 이제 ‘최고의 아름다움’[神聖 性]으로 가장(假裝)하고 악취로 표출되는 인간의 욕망을 감추는 도구가 되었다, 파트리크 쥐스킨트의 소설『향수』는 주인공 그르누이(Grenouille)를 통해 향에 내포된 이러한 이중성을 잘 보여주고 있다. 본 글에서는 ‘가장 아름다운 신의 냄새’를 소유하고자 하는 그르누이의 감각의 여정 속에서 노출되는 인간의 위선과 기만의 양상을 살펴보았다. 나아가 그 ‘아름다운 신의 냄새’를 소유하려고 한 것이 곧 신성성을 향한 감각의 변질과정이었음을 살펴보았다. 이와 같은 고찰은 감성적 지각을 강조한 뵈메의 ‘분위기’(Atmosphäre) 개념과 감각의 영적인 회복을 주장한 발타살의 ‘따뜻함’(Wärme) 개념을 토대로 하였다.

Humans had long been using perfumes as a medium for communing with gods. Humans had thus taken gods to be the objects of their sense perception and used their olfactory sense to recognize the beauty of the gods. In the eighteenth century, however, perfumes then became a tool that took on the utmost beauty or sacredness and concealed human desire, which was represented as the foul odor of the cities. Patrick Süskind’s novel Das Parfum poignantly reveals such a dual nature inherent in the fragrance through the narrative of Grenouille, the protagonist of the novel. This study aims at examining the modes of human hypocrisy and deception exposed through Grenouille’s tour of senses. Furthermore, it intends to show that possession of the god’s fragrance is nothing but a process of transforming human senses toward sacredness. In order to accomplish such goals, this study bases its theoretical assumptions on Jakob Böhme’s concept of Atmosphäre, which emphasizes the importance of emotional perception, and Hans Urs von Balthasar’s notion of Wärme, which upholds the need for the spiritual recovery of the senses.
