『깊은 강 』은 엔도의 평생을 사로잡고 있던 문학적 테마인 일본인의 심성에 적합한 모성적 신을 탐구한 역작이다. 마음의 상처와 죄의식을 치유받기 위해 인도여행을 떠난 다섯 명의 등장인물은 힌두적 환경과 갠지스 강을 통하여 개별적인 종교 체험을 하고 구원을 얻는다. 인간의 고통을 무화시키는 갠지스 강은 기독교의 부활과 불교의 전생까지도 함께 포용해 흐르는 신적 실재로 나타난다. 어머니로서의 강은 영혼을 정화하며 초월을 지향하는 힘을 소유하고 있었다. 엔도는 기독교에 뿌리를 두고 있으나 서양의 하나님을 체화하지 못하고 종교다원주의 관점에서 예수를 이해하려고 했다. 그 결과 예수는 가쿠레 기리시탄의 고통을 위무하고 사랑으로 감싸 안는 상징이 되었다. 예수는 인간의 모범을 보여준 성자였고 죽임을 당함으로써 인간의 종교성을 고양시키는 신화를 탄생시켰다. 예수의 부활은 이러한 관점에서 은유적 성육신에 해당하고 문화적 역사적 맥락에 따라 성육신은 반복적으로 이어질 수 있다는 희망을 남긴다. 예수를 본받은 오쓰의 성육신은 일본인의 심성에 적합한 모성적 신의 원형으로 떠오를 수 있다.

Deep River is a masterpiece that explores the maternal God suitable for the Japanese mind, a literary theme that has gripped the entire life of Endo. The five characters, on a trip to India to heal their wounds and guilt, experience individual religions and get their salvation through the Hindu environment and the Ganges River. The river as a mother possesses the power to purify the soul and aim for transcendence. Although Endo was rooted in Christianity, he failed to embody Western God and tried to understand Jesus in view of religious pluralism. As a result, Jesus has become a symbol of comforting and embracing the pain of Girishitan Gikure. Jesus was a saint who showed love and sacrifice, he created a myth that enhanced the ideal of human life. The resurrection of Jesus corresponds to a metaphorical Incarnation in this view, leaving hope according to the cultural and historical context. The sacrifice of Otsu, who imitated Jesus, can emerge as a prototype of a maternal god suitable for the Japanese mind. Metaphorical incarnation can be universally repeated and occur multidisciplinary.
