현대 메모리얼 공간은 역사의 어두운 면과 잊혀지는 사람들을 기억하고자 하며 기억을 고착화 하는 것이 아니라, 관람자 개개인에게 영향을 미치는 오늘의 가치관과 감흥을 확인하게 하는 것을 궁극적인 목표로 둔다. 본 연구는 선행연구를 바탕으로 국내에 조성된 사건을 기념하는 현대 메모리얼 공간의 특성을 고찰한다. 현황분석의 내용은 공간의 구성방식, 관람자 체험유형, 도입요소 등으로 분류되며, 지향해야 할 방향성과 발전가능성을 제시한다. 우리나라 메모리얼 공간에서 형태적 특성과 기념의 의미가 조금씩 변화하고 있는 것은 사실이지만, 기념성을 외부공간에 녹이는 표현방법에서 전통적 공간 구성방식과 도입요소를 채택하는 것으로 나타났다. 1960년대부터 본격적으로 조성되어 상당한 시간이 흘렀음에도, 국내 메모리얼 공간에서 변화가 없는 점은 현대인의 변화한 기념에 대한 자세와 다크투어리즘에 대한 적절한 응답이 되지 못하고 있는 실정이다. 더구나 독립운동, 항일운동, 그리고 민주화운동 등 저항을 통해 역사를 지킨 사람들과 과거의 사건을 기리는 방식이 권위적인 형식을 탈피하지 못하고 있는 것은 역설적인 부분이다. 메모리얼 공간은 이전과 다름없이 계속적으로 증가하고 발전할 것이다. 본 연구는 우리나라에도 역사 고증을 바탕으로, 설계단계에서부터 심층적인 고민을 통한 감각적이고 풍부한 메모리얼 공간을 표현해낼 필요가 있음을 명시하며, 추후 조성될 국내의 현대 메모리얼 공간설계를 위한 종합적 단서가 되기를 기대한다.
The modern memorial space seeks to remember the tragedy of history and those who are forgotten in the past. The ultimate goal is not that to permanent the memories, but they reinforce and inspire today's values through individual's communication and commemoration. This study examines the characteristics of modern memorial space in Korea based on implications derived from previous studies. The contents of the analysis are classified into compositions of the space, visitors’ experiences, monuments, etc. and states opportunities and possibilities of development. It is official that the physical characteristics and what they imply are changing gradually among memorial spaces in Korea. Nonetheless, the method applied in such memorial spaces was no different from construction methods applied in former days as well as placing elements on a external space habitually. Although it was first established in the 1960s, the fact that there is no clear change in the domestic memorial space even though time has passed by is not a proper response to the attitude of the visitors nowadays as well as to the dark tourism. Moreover, it is ironical that the way of remembering history of freedom such as independence movements has not escaped the authoritative layouts. Memorial spaces will continue to develop and grow. This study states that it is now necessary to consider embodying sensuous and rich memorial space, starting from the process of planning and designing and also to provide comprehensive clues in actual designs of memorial spaces in domestic landscapes in the future.
