본 논문은 크리스타 좀머러(Christa Sommerer, 1964-)와 로랑 미뇨노(Laurent Mignonneau,1967-)의 공동 작품인 인공생명 이론을 접목한 인터랙티브 예술 작품을 분석한다. 좀머러와 미뇨노가 미술계에 주목 받게 된 계기는 첫 작품이라 할 수 있는 <인터랙티브 식물 성장Interactive Plan Growing>(1992)를 발표 하면서부터이다. 이 계기로 좀머러와 미뇨노는 인공생명 개념을 예술분야에 적용하기 위한 본격적으로 연구를 시작했으며, 이후 인터랙티브 아트의 예술적 가능성을 한 차원 더 높였다는 평가를 받았다. 이들은 인간과 상호작용하는 동시에 스스로 자생하는 인공생명을 작품으로 보여주며 뉴미디어 아트의 한 지평을 넓혔다. 본 글에서는 우선 작품 제작에 핵심 개념이라 할 수 있는 인공생명의 정의와 함께 인공생명 개념이 예술과 접목될 수 있던 계기를 살펴본다. 다음으로 좀머러와 미뇨노가 인공생명 예술 개념에 관심 갖게 된 계기와 더불어 이들 작품의 특징이라 할 수 있는 상호작용성을 중심으로 분석해 보고자 한다. 또한 인공생명이라는 존재가 인터랙티브 아트로서 갖는 관람자와의 상호작용성을 알아본다.

This paper analyzes the interactive artistic work of Christa Sommerer (1964-) and Laurent Mignonneau (1967-) — collaborative work based on the theory of artificial life. Sommerer and Mignonneau first came to prominence in the art world with what may be considered their first work: Interactive Plant Growing (1992). Following this, their extensive research on how to apply the concept of artificial life to artistic fields is considered to have raised the artistic possibilities of interactive art to new heights. With regard to the art of artificial life in particular, their unique aesthetics and their work demonstrating self-regenerating artificial life which simultaneously interacts with humans broadened the horizons of new media art. In this paper, I will examine the definition of artificial life — the key concept — and the process of how the concept of artificial life was combined with art during the creation of artistic works. Next, I will describe how I became interested in Sommerer and Mignonneau’s concept of the art of artificial life as well as interactivity — the defining characteristic of their work — in the art of artificial life. I will also examine the interactivity of artificial life with audiences as interactive art.
