1919년 4월 4일 익산에서 일어난 독립만세운동은 농촌의 한 교회가 주축이 되어 일으킨 매우 격렬하고 장엄한 의거였다. 이날 목숨을 바쳐 만세운동을 이끈 선각자들의 순교(혹은 순국)정신을 선교적 관점에서 살펴보는 것이 이 논문의 목적이다. 이를 위해 익산지역 선교역사와 남전교회의 설립과정 그리고 4.4 만세운동의 준비과정과 만세현장을 순교자들을 중심으로 살펴볼 것이다. 먼저, 이들의 정신은 순교와 선교정신이다. 만세현장에서 목숨을 잃은 6명 가운데 문용기, 박영문, 장경춘, 박도현은 신실한 그리스도인이었다. 이들은 하나님과 독립을 믿으며 죽음으로써 이를 증거(μαρτυρία)한 증인(μάρτυς)들이 다. 다음으로, 파송(missio)공동체 정신이다. 남전교회는 세상으로 파송 받은 공동체로써 세상을 구원하시는 ‘하나님의 선교’(missio Dei) 에 참여했다. 끝으로, 정의, 평화, 창조보전(JPIC)의 정신이다. 이것은 최근 세계교회가 일으킨 운동이나 순교자들은 이것을 앞서 실천한 선구자이다.

This article aims to study the national independence movement that took place at the Namjeon Church in Iksan and the spirit of those who were martyred there. The March 1st Movement, which took place on April 4, 1919 at the Iksan marketplace, was a very vigorous and magnificent revolution that took place mainly by a church in a rural area. Several people lost their lives on this day, and these are the leading spirit of the era that led the national independence movement at the expense of their lives. In this respect, it is meaningful to examine the spirit of the victims from a missionary perspective. The spirit of these can be summarized as martyrdom and missionary spirit. Of the six who died, four persons (Moon Yong-gi, Park Young-moon, Jang Kyung-chun, Park Do-hyun) were faithful Christians. They are witnesses (μάρτυς) who rely on God and testify to independence (μαρτυρία) by faith. Another is the spirit of the missio community who participated in the ‘missio Dei.’ Finally, it is the spirit of Justice, Peace and Integrity of Creation(JPIC).
