연구는 중년 기혼 여성들의 시민단체 자원봉사활동 참여 의미는 어떠한지 살펴보고자 수행되었으며, 구체적으로 어린이도서연구회라는 시민단체 활동 참여 과정에서 이들은 어떠한 삶의 변화들을 경험하는지 살펴보고자 하였다. 이를 위해 5년 이상 이 단체에서 활동해 온 중년 기혼 여성 참가자 6명을 대상으로 심층 면접을 실시하였다. 인터뷰 자료는 전사되어 반복적 비교 방법을 통하여 분석되었다. 중년기혼 여성들의 시민단체 봉사활동 참여의 의미는 삶의 변화와 관련된 네 가지 범주로 도출되었다. 우선, 이들은 책 토론, 책 읽어주기, 자신의 재능과 관심사 발견 등 새로운 자아 발견 경험을 하고 있었다. 둘째는 가족의 지지나 긍정적 관계형성, 혹은 새로운 가족 고민 발생 등 가족 관계 변화도 경험하고 있었다. 셋째는 교류 집단 구성원의 변화나, 유대감을 형성하는 등 대인관계 변화를 경험하고 있었다. 넷째는 새로운 진로를 모색하거나 진로 가치를 재발견하는 등 진로에 대한 변화를 경험하고 있었다. 이러한 결과에 근거하여 이 연구는 중년 기혼여성의 사회 참여 기회 확장 등 관련된 시사점을 논의하였다.

The purpose of this study was to explore the meanings of middle aged women’s civic group volunteer experiences which were drawn from participation in a children’s book association branch. This study conducted in-depth interviews with six middle aged women who had been participating in the activity for more than five years. The interview data were fully transcribed and analyzed with a constant comparison method. The meanings of middle aged women’s participation were represented as life changes, which were categorized as four big themes. First, they have experienced discovery of new selves through book reading and discussion activities and finding out of new talents and interests. Second, they have experienced changes of family relations through family support and positive relation building or emerging new concerns on family members. Third, they have experienced changes of social relations including social group member changes and characteristics of group bonding. Fourth, They have experienced changes in relation with career plan through pursuing new career and changing job perspective. In conclusion, this study found out that middle aged women had experienced several changes of their lives and meanings through participating in the community civic group volunteer activities. Based on such findings, this study suggested that chances of social participation were extended and more provided for middle aged women.
