본 연구는 이상근 작품을 연구대상으로 삼는 텍스트 분석의 관점에서 벗어나 이상근의 창작과 그의 음악 활동에 영향을 준 사회문화적 배경 연구에 집중하였다. 이상근은 창작뿐 아니라 교육 과 저술, 비평, 평론, 음악 해설 등 다양한 영역에서 활동을 펼쳤다. 그가 거점으로 삼았던 진주, 마산 그리고 부산의 지역문화와 음악 교사와 교수로서의 사회적 위치와 활동, 지역을 기반으로 한 인적 네트워크는 그의 작곡과 연주 활동뿐 아니라 음악교육과 교과서 저술, 향신회 같은 음악 단 체 결성과 후원으로 이어졌다. 무엇보다 예술가들과의 교류와 사회문화적 배경은 그의 음악창작 과 밀접하게 연결되어 있음을 알 수 있었다.

This study focused on the social and cultural context that influenced the musical activities of the composer Lee Sang Guen. Lee contributed to various areas such as composition, education, writing, criticism, and review. His activities took place mainly in and around Jinju, Masan, and Busan. The local culture of the cities, the social networks, and Lee’s social position and actions as a music teacher and a professor are connected with his musical creation, the writing of the music textbooks, and organizing musical associations such as the Contemporary Music Society in Busan. Furthermore, it is stressed that the personal contact between artists and the social and cultural context in Masan and Busan led to Lee’s musical compositions.
