이 논문은 네 사중주의 첫 번째 작품인 번트 노턴 을 기독교적 관점에서 살펴보는 것이다. 네 사중주의 주제는 시간과 영원, 그리고 그것의 교차점인 성육(Incarnation)에 대한 화자의 명상이라고 할 수 있 다. 네 사중주는 헤라클레이토스와 바가바드 기타 그리고 십자가의 성 요한, 노르위치의 줄리안 등의 동서양의 철학적, 종교적 사고들을 참 조하고 인용하면서 이 작품의 주제를 표현하였다. 엘리엇은 이 작품의 후반부에서 기독교적 의미를 명확하게 표현했지만 번트 노턴 같은 초 반부에서 기독교적 의미를 직접적으로 언급하지 않았다. 그래서 몇몇 연구들은 동양 사상의 관점에서 네 사중주를 고찰하기도 했다. 그러 나 번트 노턴 에서 네 사중주의 구조적 모델로서 후반부에 명시된 기독교적인 관점들이 함축적으로 표현되었다. 번트 노턴 3부에서 표 현된 암흑이나 5부에 나타난 “십단의 비유”는 십자가의 성 요한의 신비 주의 저서에서 참조된 것이며, 이스트 코우커 3부에서 이 암흑에 관 한 내용이 반복적으로 나타난다. 5부에 나타난 “사랑”은 아리스토텔레스 적인 제 1운동자의 의미 뿐만 아니라 기독교의 성육의 의미를 함축한 다. 이 성육은 드라이 샐베이지즈 5부의 “반쯤 추측된 암시, 반쯤 이 해된 재능은 성육이다”(The hint half guessed, the gift half understood, is Incarnation.)에서 직접적으로 언급되었다. 그리고 이 작품에 나타나는 장 미, 빛, 새, 나무 등과 같은 다양한 이미지들에도 기독교적인 의미가 함 축되어 있음을 발견하게 된다.

This article examines “Burnt Norton” of Four Quartets in a Christain perspective. I think that the theme of Four Quartets is the speaker’s meditation on time and eternity, and the Incarnation that is the intersection of time and eternity. In this work, Eliot expressed its theme referring to Eastern and Western philosophical and religious traditions such as Heraklitus, Bhagavad-Gita, St. John of the Cross and Julian of Norwich, etc. Eliot told clearly the Christian tradition or doctrine in the latter part of Four Quartets such as “Dry Salvages” and “Little Gidding” but didn’t represent the Christian one in “Burnt Norton” and “East Coker”. Several critics have examined Four Quartets in Eastern philosophical and religious ideas. However, we are able to find Christian implications that are expressed apparently in the latter part of Four Quartets in “Burnt Norton” as its structural model. “The darkness” in BN Ⅲ and “the figure of the ten stairs” in BN Ⅴ are referred to the mystical works of St. John of the Cross. These expressions referred to St. John of the Cross like “the darkness” appears repeatedly in “East Coker” Ⅲ. “Love” in BN Ⅴ implys the Christian “Incarnation” as well as the Aristotelian Unmoved mover. The Incarnation is mentioned clearly in “The hint half guessed, the gift half understood is Incarnation” of “Dry Salvages” Ⅴ. And we are able to find that various images like a rose, light, a bird and trees in “Burnt Norton” have the Christian implication.
