설령 엘리엇 자신도 네 사중주를 자신의 최고의 걸작으로 간주했지 만 실제 우리가 이 작품을 정확하게 감상하기란 결코 쉽지 않다. 이 작 품만이 지닌 철학적․종교적 사상이 그 난해함을 가중시키고 있다. 그 래서 본 글은 네 사중주를 통하여 우리 인간의 영혼계에 초점을 맞추 었다. 즉, 우리 인간의 영혼의 이동 모습을 고찰해 본 것이다. 우리 인 간의 영혼은 물리적/ 물질적 세계에서 영적/비가시적 세계로의 이동이 가능하다. 그것을 위한 최우선 조건이 바로 자기를 부정하는 것이며 아 울러 예수 그리스도의 성육화와 사랑 등이 그 중심을 차지하고 있다.

Eliot’s Four Quartets is closely related to a religion. Especially christianity centers on Four Quartets. Christianity emphases on more invisible and spiritual than the visible and physical world. Eliot also demands that our minds should be toward the invisible and spiritual world of our soul. This paper concentrates on human’s movement of soul. Four Quartets shows that human’s soul is not fixed but moved. So Eliot devides our internal world into two: light and darkness, demanding our soul should not be focused on darkness, but the light. The former means that our soul is toward physical, visible, and material world and the latter toward spiritual, invisible world. Certainly Eliot stresses on the latter. In order that our soul is toward spiritual world, we should, above all, remove our fancy and sense as well as our own selfishness and greedy mind and seek after self-denial. Also Eliot emphases on Jesus Christ’s Incarnation, love. Through these, we could attain the spiritual world. Concludingly Eliot’s key is not the physical, material but spiritual, invisible world..
