이 논문의 목적은 20세기 북미의 아나뱁티스트 연구사를 정리하는 것이며, 특히 교회론을 중심으로 한 연구 동향을 살펴보았다. 북미 아나뱁티즘 연구는 20세기 초반에 중요한 계기를 맞이하는데, 해럴드 벤더(Harold S. Bender)의 등장으로 벤더학파(Bender School)라고 하는 학자 그룹을 형성하게 되었고, 그 결과 그동안에 많은 오해로부터 고통받아왔던 아나뱁티스트의 신학과 신 앙이 주류 종교개혁자들의 그것들과 본질적인 차이가 없음을 주장하게 된다. 이를 시작으로 세기 중반부터는 아나뱁티즘의 역사와 신학에 대한 종합적인 연구들이 등장하게 되었으며, 아나뱁티스트의 교회론에 대한 관심도 증가하 기 시작한다. 아나뱁티스트 교회론의 연구에서는 프랭클린 리텔(Franklin H Littell)의 연구를 필두로 다양한 시도들이 있었다. 마지막으로 필자는 20세기 아나뱁티스트의 연구가 특정 인물과 신학에 치중된 측면이 있으며 교회론 연구에서도 치리에 관한 연구에 치중되어왔음을 지적하며 보다 다양한 인물 과 주제에 대한 연구의 필요성을 제안한다.

The purpose of this study is to summarize the research history of Anabaptists in North America in the twentieth-Century, and especially the research trends focusing on ecclesiology. The study of Anabaptism in North America reached a new phase at the beginning of the twentieth-Century. With the advent of Harold S. Bender, a group of scholars known as the Bender School appeared. As a result, they assert that the theology and faith of Anabaptists, who have suffered from many misunderstandings, are not fundamentally different from those of the mainstream Reformers. In addition, with this growing interest in the Anabaptists in the past few decades, essential works of the Anabaptist study have been published. The recent increase in interest in Anabaptism has naturally led to an interest in the ecclesiology of sixteenth-century Anabaptism because the agenda of Anabaptists is always linked to the practice of their ecclesiology. Perhaps the most critical and comprehensive publication on the subject is by Franklin Hamlin Littell, and various studies have been attempted. Finally, I suggest for improving future studies that the research of twentieth-Century Anabaptists has focused on only several figures and theology and that most study of ecclesiology has also been focused on the study of the discipline, suggesting the need for research on more diverse figures and subjects.
