『12월 12일』은 이상의 첫 번째 소설로 조선총독부에서 발행한 월간지 『조선』 1930년 2월호부터 12월호까 지 9회에 걸쳐 연재된 장편 소설이다. 『2월 12일』은 적빈으로 처자식, 노모를 잃은 ‘X’가 일본에서 자본주 의의 본질과 모순을 경험하고 고국에 돌아오지만 형제간의 갈등 속에 거의 모든 것을 잃고 자살한다는 내용의 소설이다. X는 향락과 낭비를 통해 자본주의의 소비 문제를 깨닫고 육체를 손상하면서까지 물질문 명의 폭력성을 몸소 체험하는 등 자본주의의 원리를 체득하고 돌아온다. 하지만 동생 T는 돈이 자본이 되어 돈을 버는 자본주의 경제 구조를 이해하지 못한 채 형의 제안을 거부하고 대립한다. X와 T, X와 T의 아들 업의 갈등 끝에 이들은 파국적 결말을 맞이한다. 본 연구는 이상의『12월 12일』의 후반부 주요 서사인 형제간 갈등의 원인을 분석하였다. X와 T 형제간의 갈등과 X와 조카 업 사이의 숙질 간의 갈등의 주된 원인은 돈을 중심으로 한 경제문제와 유교적 가부장제에서 벗어나려는 근대적 주체의 형성 문제에서 비롯되었음을 확인할 수 있었다.

December 12th is Lee Sang's first novel and was serialized from February to December 1930 in the monthly magazine Chosun. In the novel, after losing his wife and children and his mother because of poverty, X, the main character goes to Japan to make money. He realizes the problem of the consumption process of capitalism through pleasure and wasting. He becomes physically disabled after an accident in a coalmine. And he realizes the violence of material civilization. He experiences the essence and contradictions of capitalism in Japan. He also learns the principle of capitalism lies in the fact that capital produces profits, and returns to Korea. And he comes back to Korea after a big windfall by chance. He meets his younger brother in Korea, but they do not get along with each other. T, his younger brother, does not understand this principle and comes to hate X. X also has a feud with his nephew. They have a catastrophic ending. Their collapse is caused by economic factors and patriarchy.
