멕시코의 영화 감독 알레한드로 곤잘레스 이냐리투 (Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu)는 자신의 영화에서 영화 속의 다양한 요소들을 입체적으로 연결하여 내러티브를 이끌어가는 방식을 즐겨 사용하는 것으로 알려져 있다. 이런 방식으로 만들어진 그의 영화들 가운데 다수의 작품이 하이퍼 링크 시네마로 분류된다. 이냐리투 감독의 하이퍼링크 시네마에 등장하는 배경음악들은 미니멀한 사운드를 가지고 있는 것이 특징이다. 이 미니멀한 음악들은 영화 속의 복잡한 스토리 구조에 동 일한 분위기를 부여하여 자칫하면 산만해질 수 있는 내러티브의 진행에 중심을 잡아주는 역할을 한다. 본 논문에서는 이것을 토대로 이냐리투 감독과 함께 활동해온 작곡가 구스타보 산타올라야 (Gustavo Santaolalla)의 영화음악을 연구의 대상으로 한다. 이 가운데 2007년 아카데미 시상식 (Academy Awards)에서 음악상 (Best Original Score)을 수상한 영화 「바벨 (Babel), 2006」을 중점적으로 분석하였다. 본 연구를 통하여 알아본 영화「바벨」에 쓰인 배경음악의 기능은 다음 과 같다. 첫째, 민속악기의 사용과 선법을 통해 시공간적 배경을 확인시키고, 서로 다른 공간을 동일한 서사로 엮는다. 둘째, 영화 속 인물들이 느끼는 정서에 테마가 구성되어 각각의 인물들을 연결시킨다. 셋째, 영화에 시공간적 연속성을 부여하여 각각의 이야기들을 연결시킨다. 영화「바 벨」에서 쓰인 구스타보의 음악은 위의 기능들이 독립적으로 또는 복합적으로 작용하여, 영화를 이루는 시각적 요소들만큼이나 내러티브의 전개와 해석에 크게 기여하고 있다. 작곡가 구스타보 는 선법의 사용과 최소한의 악기 구성만을 이용한 미니멀한 사운드로 이를 모두 구현해 내고 있 다.

Mexican film director Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu is known to enjoy using the method of leading narratives by connecting various elements in the film in three dimensions. Many of his films made in this way are classified as hyperlink cinema. The background music featured in Inarritu's hyperlink cinema is characterized by minimal sound. These minimal music give the same atmosphere to the complex story structure in the movie, which plays a central role in the progress of narratives that can be distracting. Based on this, the subject of this paper is the film music of Gustavo Santaolalla, a composer who has worked with director Inarritu. Among them, the film 「Babel」, 2006, which won the Best Original Score at the 2007 Academy Awards, was analyzed. The functions of the background music used in the movie 「Babel」, which was examined through this study, are as follows. First, the use of folk instruments and lines confirm the spatiotemporal background, and weave different spaces into the same narrative. Second, the theme is composed of the emotions felt by the characters in the movie, connecting each character. Third, it connects each story by giving the film spatiotemporal continuity. Gustavo's music used in the movie 「Babel」 has the above functions independently or in combination, contributing as much to the development and interpretation of narratives as the visual elements that make up the film. Composer Gustavo embodies both the use of Zen and minimal sound using only minimal musical instrument composition.
