전도 부인에 관한 연구는 교회 성장의 패러다임으로부터 벗어나지 못하고 있다. 즉, 전도 부인을 초기 한국 교회의 형성과 발전에 이바지한 인물로 묘사하는데 주력해 왔다는 것이다. 이와 같은 관점은 전도 부인의 공헌을 교회의 확장으로 환원시킬 뿐만 아니라 이들이 후대에 남긴 또 다른 신앙의 유산을 발견하지 못하게 된다. 이러한 문제의식을 중심으로 본 연구는 전도 부인의 정체성과 활동에 대한 새로운 이해를 도모하고자 한다. 먼저, 세계 기독교학의 등장으로 인해 서구 중심의 선교 역사의 이해로부터 벗어나야 할 필요성을 제기할 것이다. 이를 통해 우리는 전도 부인을 선교사들의 조력자로 축소시키지 않고 협력자 이자 지도자, 즉 주체적인 활동 주체로 볼 수 있게 될 것이다. 또한, 전도 부인을 교회의 형성, 성장, 그리고 발전 중심의 관점으로부터 벗어나 윤리적 관점에서 조망할 수 있게 된다. 본 연구는 주변성, 회복 탄력성, 그리고 환대의 세 가지 윤리적 개념을 통해 전도 부인의 정체성과 활동을 새롭게 이해할 것을 제안한다. 그 결과, 타인을 공감하 고, 위로하고, 돕고자 하는 사랑의 힘이 곧 전도 부인이 남긴 진정한 유산임을 깨닫게 될 것이다.

The main purpose of this article is to propose an alternative understanding of the Korean Bible Woman and their works. Based on an examination of how the study of World Christianity challenges the Western-centric understanding of the history of mission, I will argue that this challenge leads us to see the contributions of the Korean Bible Women as more than the formation, growth, and expansion of the church. Along with the lession from the study of World Christianity, I will provide an ethical lens to see the Korean Bible Woman as more than the catalyst for the formation, growth, and expansion of the church. By offering three ethucal concepts such as marginality, resilience, and hospitality, I will attempt to re-identify the Korean Bible Woman as a particular type of agent who exercises the power of love to empathize, comfort, care, and help others. Thus, I will conclude that the legacy of the Korean Bible Woman will be understood in a different way.
