프랑수아 모리악은 선배 작가였던 앙드레 지드가 보낸 “소설가가 될 것인가? 아니면 기독교인이 될 것인가?”라는 질문 앞에서 큰 고민에 빠졌다. 이 고민은 모리악이 자신의 문학관을 총체적으로 재정립하는 계기가 된다. 진실한 소설가가 되기 위해 기독교인이기를 포기해야 한다는 지드의 주장과는 달리, 모리악은 이 둘 사이의 공존을 선택했다. 모리악은 진실한 소설가이면서 동시에 진실한 기독교인이 될 수 있다고 생각한다. 모리악의 작품에서 기독교적 구원과 세속적 인간 비극의 주제가 함께 공존하고, 은총과 죄가 함께 공존하는 이유도 여기에 있다. 또한 모리악은 작가의 존재론적 위치를 신의 모방자이자 신의 사도와도 같은 것으로 정립한다. 인간 실존과 은총의 개입을 총체적으로 그려내기 위해 작가는 카이로스적인 관점을 가져야 한다. 하지만 작가가 하나님과 같이 전능한 창조자는 아니다. 작가의 창작은 무로부터의 창조가 아니다. 작가는 인물이나 독자들에게 절대적 권위를 가질 수도 없다. 작가는 그저 주어진 상황으로부터 작품을 만들어낸다. 하지만 작가는 비극적 실존의 현장과 은총의 세계를 연결하는 역할을 위해 그 주어진 상황들을 총체적으로 구성하고 종합해야 하는 것이다.

François Mauriac received a letter from his senior writer, André Gide, asking “Will you become a novelist? Or a Christian?” and he was deeply troubled by the question. This concern allowed Mauriac to redefine his view of literature completely. Contrary to Gide’s claim that one must give up being a Christian to become a true novelist, Mauriac chose the coexistence of the two. Mauriac believes that one can be a true novelist and a true Christian at the same time. This is why the themes of Christian salvation and secular human tragedy coexist, and why grace and sin coexist in Mauriac’s works. Mauriac’s works are full of suffering characters. In addition, Mauriac establishes the writer’s ontological position as an imitator and an apostle of God. To comprehensively depict the human existence and the intervention of grace, the writer must have a kairos perspective. However, the writer is not an almighty creator like God. The writer’s creative work is not a created from nothing. The writer cannot have absolute authority over characters or readers. That is, Mauriac argues that the writer simply creates a work in a given situation.
