본 논문은 존 던과 조지 허버트의 시에 드러난 죽음관을 비교하는 것이 목적이다. 그들은 17세기 초 잉글랜드의 성직자이자 형이상학파 시인으로, 서로 교류하며 종교시를 남겼으나, 그들 시의 갈래와 성격은 다르다. 이를 알기 위해 그들의 종교관을 파악하여 시를 분석하였다. 결과적으로 던은 아르미니우스의 사상과 가톨릭의 종교관을 가졌던 반면, 허버트는 칼뱅의 사상과 개신교의 종교관을 가졌다. 그래서 던은 시에서 아르미니우스주의의 행위구원론과 같이 회개라는 인간의 노력을 끊임없이 촉구한다. 또한 가톨릭의 교리와 같이 사후에 연옥과 같은 중도 상태를 드러내며, 천국에 대한 소망이 없다. 반면 허버트는 시에서 칼뱅주의의 사상과 같이 오직 그리스도를 믿음으로 구원을 확신한다. 또한 개신교의 교리와 같이 사후에 영혼과 육체가 즉시 분리될 것을 언급하며, 천국에 대한 소망을 드러낸다. 특히 그는 몸의 부활할 것을 강조한다. 그러므로 그들의 시에 드러난 죽음관은 그들의 종교관과 관련한다.

This paper compares the perspectives on death in the poetry of John Donne and George Herbert. They were Anglican priests and metaphysical poets in early 17th-century England, who interacted with each other and left behind religious poetry, but their poetic genres and atmospheres differ. To understand these distinctions, their religious beliefs were examined. Consequently, Donne, grounded in Catholicism with Arminian theology, emphasizes synergistic salvation through human effort in his poetry, consistently urging repentance. He also depicts an intermediate state after death, lacking a portrayal of heaven and devoid of hope for it. In contrast, Herbert, an adherent of Protestantism with Calvinist theology, expresses confidence in salvation through faith in Christ in his poetry. He asserts the immediate separation of soul and body after death and expresses hope for heaven, emphasizing the bodily resurrection of saints. Ultimately, the perspectives on death in their poetry are closely related to their respective religious beliefs.
