본 논문의 목적은 만해 한용운(1879~1944, 이하 만해)의 일제 통치시기에 선명상적 사유를 기반으로 형성된 시를 중심으로 마음을 힐링하고 시대극복 성 찰과 희망의 메시지가 어떻게 투영되고 있는지를 살펴보는 데에 있다. 일제의 어떠한 회유와 강요에도 굴하지 않고 지조를 지키며 불굴의 정신으로 조국독립 과 인류평화를 위해 치열한 삶을 살았던 만해에게 시를 쓰는 것은 그 자신에 대 한 고백이며, 고난의 극복 힐링 명상이며 민족의 자긍심을 고취하고, 생명사랑 을 실천하고자 하는 몸짓이었다. 여기에는 풍부한 선시적 이미지로 은유와 상 징, 비유와 역설을 통하여 보다 높은 정신적 차원에서 일제에 대한 저항의식이 농축되어 있다. 그 결과물이 『님의 침묵』이다. 특히 시집 『님의 침묵』(1926)의 핵심을 이루고 있는 ‘님’은 연인・조국・ 부처 등 다층적인 의미를 지니며, ‘님의 침묵’이라는 표현은 당시 일제 강점기 의 암울한 민족상황을 가장 압축적으로 상징하고 있다. 비록 ‘님’은 침묵하였지 만 만해는 결코 침묵하지 않았다. ‘님’을 찾아내어 어두운 현실을 살아가는 조 선 민족의 가슴에 현실극복의 의지와 자유와 평화가 담보된 독립 국가와 인류 평화를 찾으려는 무한한 자긍심과 연대의식을 심어주고자 하였다. 그래서 만해 에게는 만물이 서로 조화를 이루고 화합하는 사랑과 평화의 관계망 구축이 그 의 유일한 화두였다. 그것은 나와 세계가 하나로 이어진 일체동근이라는 삶의 인식에서 비롯된다 할 수 있다. 그것은 곧 모든 생명존재가 상호 연기적이며 상 호의존의 화엄적 세계관을 역동적으로 보여 주고 있는 시적 방편이라 할 수 있 다. 따라서 동체대비의 생명존중과 자유와 평등 기반의 깊은 사유에서 형성된 만해의 선적 사유의 명상 시들은 일제 강점기라는 어두운 시대의 고난을 극복 하고 해방된 미래를 지향하게 하는 치유와 희망의 메시지를 전하는 담론으로서 그 의미를 지닌다고 할 수 있다.

The purpose of this paper is to briefly examine the formation and development process of poetry literature of Manhae(1879-1944), and to look into how the message of healing and hope is being projected chiefly on his meditative poems conceived and produced based on respect for life, freedom, and equality. Manhae lived fiercely for the independence of his country and for the peace of mankind with a dauntless spirit, keeping his principles. Writing poetry to Manhae was a confession to himself and a gesture to approach close communication with nature. He resisted Japanese imperialism at a higher spiritual level with rich poetic images: metaphors, symbols, metaphors, and paradoxes, etc. The result is Nimeuichimmuk (Silence of the Beloved). "Nim," which forms the core of ‘Nim's Silence,’ has multi-layered meanings such as lovers, homeland, and the Buddha. The expression 'silence of Nim' is the most compressed symbol of the dark national situation at that time. Nim was silent, but Manhae was never silent. He aimed to instill an infinite sense of pride and solidarity for overcoming reality and winning an independent state that guarantees freedom and peace in the hearts of the Korean people. His only topic was the establishment of a network of love and peace in which all things harmonize with each other. It can be said that it stems from the perception of life that I and the world are united as one. It is poetic mechanism that all living beings are mutually acting and dynamically showing the magnificent worldview of interdependence. Therefore, Manhae's meditative poems conceived and produced from deep thinking based on respect for life and freedom and equality can be said to have their own importance as a discourse that conveys a message of healing and hope that overcomes the hardships of the dark era of Japanese colonial rule and aims for a liberated future.
