본 논문은 평보(平步) 서희환(徐喜煥, 1934-1995)의 독특한 한글 서체가 형성된 과정에 관한 연구이다. 주지하다시피 평보 서희환은 독창적인 서체로 현대 한글 서예사에 커다란 발자취 를 남긴 인물이다. 우리는 흔히 그의 글씨를 ‘평보체’라 부른다. 그렇다면 그의 이러한 서체는 어떻게 창신 되었으며 어떠한 사 상적 배경에서 출발하였는지에 대한 의문이 생긴다. 이에 그 내력을 밝혀 한글서예의 창의적 미감을 확장시키는 것이 본 연 구의 목적이다. 평보는 훈민정음의 각판본(刻版本)에서 한글서예의 뿌리를 두고자 하였다. 그중에서도 특히 석보상절과 월인천강지곡에서 한글서예의 원형을 찾고자 하였다. 아름다운 원형의 조형에 전·예(篆·隷) 필획(筆劃)의 생동감을 불어넣어 판각의 과정에서 오는 필획의 망실을 복원하였다. 이를 위해 평보는 글씨의 연 원(淵I)에 관한 연구와 갑문(甲文), 석문(石文), 한예(漢隷), 북 위서(北魏書) 등 한문서예 전반에 걸친 서체들의 생동미를 한 글에 접목시키는 일을 중시했다. 즉 한글서예가 호방하고 생동 감이 넘치며 문기(文氣) 어리고 신운(神韻)이 감도는 경지까지 끌어올리는 것을 일생의 과업으로 삼았다. 구체적으로 평보 서작의 방법론이자 창신의 개념인 ‘수파리 (守破離)’를 통하여 동일 작품을 시대별로 분석함으로써 평보체 의 형성 과정을 고증하였다.

This paper is a study on the process of forming a unique Hangul calligraphy style by Pyeongbo (平步) Seo Hee-hwan (徐喜 煥, 1934-1995). As is well known, Pyeongbo Seo Hee-hwan is a person who left a great mark on the history of modern Hangul calligraphy with his original typeface. We often call his handwriting 'Pyeongbo font'. If so, a question arises as to how his handwriting was created and from what ideological background. Accordingly, the purpose of this study is to expand the creative aesthetic sense of Hangul calligraphy by revealing its history. Pyeongbo attempted to have the roots of Korean calligraphy in each edition of the Hunminjeongeum. Among them, in particular, we tried to find the original form of Korean calligraphy in Seokbosangjeol and Wolcheon Gangjigok. By instilling the vitality of the Jeon and Ye (篆,隷) strokes (筆劃) into the beautiful circular form, the loss of strokes coming from the process of engraving was restored. To this end, Pyeongbo emphasized the study of the origin of writing and the incorporation of the lively beauty of calligraphy of the entire Chinese characters such as Gapmun, Seokmun, Hanye, and Bukhwiseo into Hangeul. In other words, it was made a lifelong task to raise the level of Korean calligraphy to the point where it was full of luxury and vitality, literary spirit, and divine 韻were wrapped around. Specifically, the formation process of the plain book was verified by analyzing the same work by period through the methodology of the plain book work and the concept of creation, 'Supari (守破離).
