A Study on Female Characters in Shen Congwen’s Novels during the Shanghai Period : Background and Significance of the Emergence of Love-driven Female Characters
This paper analyzes the transformation of female representation in the Shanghai period novels of Shen Congwen, a prominent figure in modern Chinese literature, through a psychological perspective. Shen Congwen was active in the Chinese literary scene from the 1920s to the 1940s and left behind approximately 200 novels, with notable changes in female representation during his Shanghai period. The study applies Carl Jung’s anima theory, particularly the concept of Helen’s anima, to explore how Shen Congwen created and developed female characters during this time. The research findings indicate that the female representation in the Shanghai period was crafted as love-driven figures through Shen Congwen’s restoration of masculinity and romantic strategies. During this period, Shen Congwen depicted female figures as more active and independent, moving beyond personal psychotherapy to incorporate social criticism and a utilitarian literary perspective that celebrates vitality. In particular, the encounter with Helen’s anima during the Shanghai period significantly influenced his literary imagination and creative process. Anima, a primordial image of women embedded in the male unconscious, shifted from maternal to romantic imagery for Shen Congwen during this period. This transition provided the background for more dynamic and proactive female characters in his novels. In conclusion, this paper reveals that the transformation of female representation in Shen Congwen’s literature is not merely a thematic change but is closely linked to his literary maturity. This research sheds light on the value of Shen Congwen’s literature and the significance of his legacy, offering crucial insights into his creative life and literary world. Future research is expected to compare and analyze changes in female representation across different creative periods of Shen Congwen to gain a deeper understanding of his overall literary world and artistic achievements.
