논문은 바네사 벨(Vanessa Bell, 1879-1961)의 오메가 공방(Omega work shops, 1913-1919)에서의 활동에 대한 연구이다. 오메가 공방에서 바네사의 역할 과 작업 활동을 주목하여 그가 현대미술에 미친 영향을 고찰하고 영국의 전통 순수 미술과 실용미술을 종합하는 총체 미술인 오메가 공방활동의 의의를 찾고자 하였다. 바네사는 1913년부터 1919년까지 오메가 공방에서 순수미술을 확장하여 자수, 카펫, 접이식 스크린, 목판화 작업을 했다. 또한 응용디자인 영역으로 직물과 드레스 를 디자인하고 유아방 공간과 벽지를 디자인하며 순수미술의 실 험을 공예디자인영 역까지 확장하여 서로의 통합을 시도했다. 바네사는 자수 작품에서 단순히 자수를 여 성의 영역이라는 전통적인 맥락으로 받아들이지 않고 예술가로서 창의성, 자발성을 더하여 순수회화의 또 다른 실험 으로 발전시키고자 했다. 바네사는 직물 디자인에서 추상적 양식을 시도하며 현대미술을 적용 하고자 했다. 바네사가 오메가 공방을 통해 순수미술과 실용미술을 종합하는 총체미술로 발전 시켜나간 1910년대의 활동에 집 중했고 바네사가 오메가 공방에서 탐구한 종합예술이 미술사에 큰 업적으로 기여했 다는 것을 고찰했다.

This thesis is a study on Vanessa Bell’s activities at the Omega work shops (1913-1919). By focusing on Vanessa’s role and work activities at the Omega Work Shop, this paper examines her influence on modern art and seeks to find the significance of her activities at the Omega Work Shop, which is a comprehensive art that combines traditional British fine art and practical art. From 1913 to 1919, Vanessa expanded her fine art at the Omega Work Shop, working on embroided, carpets, folding screens, and woodcuts. She also designed fabrics and dresses in the area of applied design, designed nursery spaces and wallpaper, and expanded her experiments in pure art to the area of craft design, attempting to integrate them. In her embroidery works, Vanessa did not simply accept embroidery as a traditional domain of women, but added creativity and spontaneity as an artist to develop it into another experiment in pure painting. Vanessa attempted to apply modern art by attempting an abstract style in her textile design. We focused on Vanessa’s activities in the 1910s, when she developed a comprehensive art that combined pure and practical art through the Omega Workshop, and examined how the comprehensive art that Vanessa explored at the Omega Workshop contributed greatly to the history of art.
