로트의 소설 􋺷욥􋺸은 유대인의 실존을 대변하는 인물 멘델을 통해 고난과 신 앙의 서사를 보여준다. 제목에서 나타나듯이 소설은 성경 􋺷욥기􋺸와의 관련성을 드러내고 있다. 소설은 􋺷욥기􋺸의 구조나 중심 모티프에서 유사성을 드러낼 뿐 아니라 신정론의 주요 쟁점들을 다루고 있다. 인간에게 신의 정의는 불명확하며 신의 자비와 분노 또한 인간의 오성으로 이해되지 않는다. 그리고 멘델의 형상 화에서 욥의 인내와 저항의 특성을 취하고 있다. 하지만 멘델의 신앙 서사는 욥 의 서사와 다르다. 성경에서 고난 받는 인물 욥은 신의 의로움을 신뢰하며 신에 게 절대적 순종을 통해 이상적인 신앙인의 모델을 구현한다. 반면 멘델의 신앙 적 삶에서는 모순과 균열이 인식된다. 그는 현실적 고난을 신의 형벌로 이해하 며 신적 정의에 대해 의구심을 표출한다. 더욱이 절망적 상태에 처하자 신의 불 의함에 분노하는 모습을 보인다. 하지만 멘델의 신앙적 갈등과 절망적 삶은 메 시아적 구원자, 메누힘을 통해 회복된다. 그러므로 멘델의 한계와 모순은 신앙 적 발전의 과정으로 확인된다. 결과적으로 인간의 신앙은 각자의 개인적 현실과 분리될 수 없으며, 신학적 이상을 기준으로 평가될 수 없는 것이다.

Joseph Roth’s novel, Job, depicts the narrative of human suffering and faith through the character of Mendel. As indicated by the title, the novel reveals its connection to the biblical Book of Job. It not only exhibits similarities in structure and central motifs but also addresses key issues of theodicy in the Bible. In Mendel’s characterization, the novel adopts the qualities of Job’s patience and resistance. However, Mendel’s faith narrative differs from that of Job. Mendel shows contradictions and limitations in his faith. He perceives hardships as divine punishment, and rages against divine injustice in a state of despair. Mendel’s suffering and religious conflict are ultimately resolved through the messianic savior, Menuchim. Therefore, his limitations in faith are recognized as the process of his spiritual development. Consequently, human faith is inseparable from personal reality and cannot be evaluated by theological ideals.
