This paper explores the connection between Emmanuel Levinas’s ethics of the Other and Christian values, focusing on responsibility and hospitality in relation to subjectivity. These concepts align with Christian teachings on loving one’s neighbor. The analysis focuses on Claire Keegan’s Small Things Like These, tracing the psychological transformation of Bill Furlong, a middle-aged coal merchant in a small Irish town. Furlong’s encounter with abused girls in a convent-run laundry challenges his conscience and the town’s collective silence. His decision to take responsibility for one of the girls reflects a growth into true Christian values, aligning with Levinas’s ethical framework. This act of responsibility leads Furlong to experience profound happiness, illustrating the transformative power of moral action. Ultimately, Levinas’s ethics of the Other can be seen as an extension of Christian principles in personal responsibility and care for one’s neighbor, demonstrating how ethical actions can profoundly transform individuals and communities.
