이 연구는 조선 후기 제작된 것으로 추정되는 관방도 성격의 함경도엽에 대한 지리･서지학적 고찰을 통해, 지도의 특징과 가치를 규명하는데 목적이 있다. 이 지도는 함경도 지역의 지형, 지세, 군사 시설 등을 상세히 표현하고 있어, 조선 후기 국방 정책 및 군사 전략 연구에 중요한 자료가 된다. 지도의 기호와 주석을 해제한 결과, 청나라가 언급되었다는 점, 백두산정계비가 표기된 점, 지도의 제작기법과 형태가 정상기의 동국지도와 매우 유사하다는 점, 홍충도의 지명이 사용되지 않은 점 등을 근거로 1740년에서 1778년 사이에 제작된 것으로 추정된다. 이 지도는 동국지도의 초기 수정본 계열에 속하며, 군사･방어에 치중한 특성이 두드러진다. 이 연구는 기존 연구에서 간과되었던 개인 소장 고지도를 분석하고, 지도에 나타난 기호와 주석을 심층적으로 해제하여 그 의미를 구체화하였다는 점에서 의의가 있다. 그러나 함경도엽의 정확한 제작 연도를 밝히지 못하고, 모든 지리 정보를 분석하지 못하였다는 한계도 가진다.

This study aims to determine the characteristics and significance of a defense map of the Hamgyeong-do section, believed to be produced in the Late Chosun period, through a geo-bibliographical analysis. Gwanbangdo, which meticulously records geographical information related to national defense, serves as important material for researching Chosun’s military policy and strategy. This study analyzed the form and symbols of the map, geographical information, and annotations of the Min-Boo Lee collection’s Hamgyeong-do map section. Based on this analysis, it is presumed that the Hamgyeong-do map section was produced during the Late Chosun period. This presumption is based on several factors: the mention of the Qing Dynasty, the inscription of the Baekdu Mountain Boundary Marker, similarity to Jeong Sang-gi’s Donggukjido in terms of map-making technique and form, and the absence of the name Hongchung-do. It can be determined that the map was produced sometime between 1740 and 1778. This particular Gwanbangdo belonged to the series of first revisions of Donggukjido, and exhibits salient features centered on military defense. This study is significant as it analyzes a privately owned ancient map, previously overlooked in the existing research, and specifically explains the meaning of symbols and annotations appearing on the map. Nevertheless, this study was limited by its inability to precisely determine the map’s production year and its failure to analyze all geographical information on the map.
