본 논문은 한국화의 채색 분야에서 새로운 길을 모색한 천경 자 화풍의 시기별 변모 과정을 분석하고 작품에 나타난 독창적 인 색채미를 연구하였다. 천경자의 작품활동은 1941년에 시작한 일본 유학 시절, 귀국 후 1945년부터 시작된 국내 활동, 1970년대 해외 스케치 여행 을 통한 작품 제작 시기로 나눌 수 있다. 일본 유학 시절 습득 한 일본 화풍과 귀국 후 일본 화풍을 극복하고 한국 전통 색채 미를 변용해 제작한 작품 제작, 1970년대 이후 해외에서의 경 험을 통해 독창적이고 환상적인 색채미로 제작된 작품을 시기 별로 나누어 조망하였다. 천경자의 색채 정서는 화려하면서도 섬세한 여성미이다. 귀 국 후 전통 조각 보자기나 옷감의 색채를 도입한 작품에는 한 국의 색 감정이 배어 있다. 물론, 해외여행 이후 작품에 나타난 이국적이고 환상적인 색채미와는 차이가 있지만, 그녀의 정체 성을 기반으로 탄생 되었음을 알 수 있었다. 해외여행 이후의 색채는 주체적인 작가의식의 색 감정 표현으로 그동안 한국화 에서 볼 수 없었던 지극히 자율적인 색 해석이 담겨있다. 1980년대 이전 한국 채색화는 일제강점기 때 유입된 일본 화 풍의 영향으로 왜색화풍이라는 오명 속에 경시되었다. 천경자 는 이를 극복하기 위해 한국의 전통 색채미와 기법을 복원하고 이후 오롯이 자신만의 독창적인 조형성과 색채미를 발현하였 다. 이러한 결과는 한국화의 현대화 과정에서 이전에 볼 수 없 었던 천경자만의 회화 양식으로 나타났다. 천경자의 예술세계 는 개인의 성과를 넘어 한국 채색화의 세계화에 새로운 이정표 를 제시한 회화사적 업적으로 기록될 것이다.

This paper analyzes the process of transformation over time in Cheon Kyung-ja's painting style, which sought a new path in the field of coloring in modern Korean painting, and studies the unique color emotions that emerged as a result. With the introduction of Monglongche, a Japanese painting technique, in the 1910s, Korean colored paintings were misunderstood as a Japanese painting style since modern times. Cheon Gyeong-ja presented a milestone to overcome this with her unique painting style and color emotion. Cheon Kyung-ja's career can be largely divided into three periods: her study abroad period in Japan in 1940, her domestic activities starting in 1945 after her return to Korea, and her period of producing works through overseas sketch trips in the 1970s. This paper looks at the contents of art education when Chun Kyung-ja studied in Japan, the works she created after overcoming Japanese painting styles and transforming traditional Korean colors after returning home, and the works produced with the fantastic color emotions acquired through her overseas travel since the 1970s. I analyzed the changes in Cheon Kyung-ja's painting style by period and the color emotions that appeared accordingly. Her color sentiment shows a delicate femininity. After returning to Korea, her work incorporated the colors of traditional patchwork quilts and fabrics and this can be seen that Korean color emotions are embedded. Of course, the exotic and fantastic color emotions that appear in her works after traveling abroad are different from traditional color emotions, but we cam see that these emotions were born from her beliefs. Until the 1980s, Korean colored paintings were misunderstood as a remnant of Japanese painting style. At a time when trying to overcome this and create modern Korean painting, Cheon Kyung-ja's painting style and color emotion will be recorded as an art historical achievement that presented a new milestone in the modernization of Korean colored painting beyond pioneering her unique art field.
