본 논문에서는 동아시아 전통의 입지이론인 풍수 이론과 서구의 정원 도시 이론의 유사점을 비교 분석하고, 풍수가 지속 가능한 도시 계획에 있어 기여할 수 있을지를 살 펴보고자 한다. 풍수는 현대 도시 개발에 있어서 크게 활용되지 못하였는데, 풍수의 모 호한 주관성과 1900년대 이전까지 역사적으로 풍수가 묘지 선정에 집중적으로 활용되 어 미신으로까지 취급된 바 있다. 그러나 최근 학계에서는 풍수를 주거 공간과 도시 계 획에 활용하는 방안에 대해서 많은 관심을 보이고 있다. 한편, 산업 혁명으로 인한 도 시와 환경 문제에 대응하기 위하여 에벤에저 하워드가 고안한 정원 도시 모델은 그 핵 심 원칙에 있어서 풍수와 유사점을 보인다. 이러한 공통 원칙에는 도시와 농촌 공간 간 의 균형, 도시 중심지에 중요한 시설 배치, 자연 경계를 활용한 도시 팽창 억제, 환경친 화적인 교통 네트워크 등이 포함된다. 두 이론 모두 사람과 환경 간의 조화로운 관계를 추구한다는 점에서도 공통점이 있다. 현대 도시 개발 이론과의 이러한 공통점으로부터 풍수가 지속 가능한 도시 개발에 있어 활용될 수 있는 여지가 충분함을 알 수 있다.

This article examines the similarities between Feng Shui, a traditional East Asian spatial theory, and the Western Garden City model, with the aim of evaluating Feng Shui's potential for contributing to sustainable urban planning. Feng Shui has largely been overlooked in modern urban development, particularly in Korea, where it was often dismissed as superstition due to its subjective aspects and its historical focus on burial site selection before the 1900s. However, recent academic interest has been very active with respect to its relevance for residential spaces and urban planning. The Garden City model, created by Ebenezer Howard in response to the urban and environmental challenges of the Industrial Revolution, shares several key principles with Feng Shui. These include the balance between urban and rural spaces, the placement of key facilities near city centres, the use of natural boundaries to curb urban sprawl, and environmentally friendly transportation networks. At their core, both theories advocate for a harmonious relationship between people and their environment. The article concludes that Feng Shui has significant potential to contribute to current discussions on sustainable, human-centered urban development.
